This is a titanium capsule

I have a question about modifying it and using it as the handle for a modernized barrel knife. How difficult would it be to open a slot big enough to slide a knife blade through on the side opposite the cap? Could a thin bladed high speed saw do it? The bottom of the capsule on the inside has to remain flat, meaning the metal can't bend inward when making the slot. If it does it will need to be filed flat.

The reason I haven't chosen a stainless steel or 7075 aluminum capsule for this is because I can't find any without two caps. There should be only one cap for this to work and this titanium capsule fits that description.

IMHO, it could be done but it just isn't practical. I agree with the others in the first thread- it isn't practical to be fumbling with pins, screwey bits, caps, tubes, and blades just to use a knife. I would rather carry a blade like the one you shared in post #5 of the first thread than spend 5 minutes trying to assemble the darned thing.
Just my .02- take it or leave it....

As for me, I'm not looking for a quick draw knife. I like kit type knives and so this idea appeals to me. Especially if the design turns out, as intended, to provide a rock solid multi-piece knife when assembled.

The pins would already be permanently attached to the blade base so there would be no fumbling with pins. It's not as complicated as the first sketch makes it seem. It basically is just a stackable config of 3 parts that all go in the handle.

Plus there's no obligation to disassemble the knife once you have it together. You can just carry it in a sheath, if you prefer.

It depends on what tools you have access too. It would probably take longer to align and clamp it on a milling machine than it would to cut the slot.

Going "lower tech", I don't see why you could not drill a hole or two and cut the slot with a fret saw with a metal cutting blade fed through the hole and mounted in the saw frame. Your stroke will be somewhat limited by the length of the tube, and you may wear out a few blades. Then clean up with files or hones. There's probably a couple different ways this could be done with a Dremel tool as well.
