Hi folks -

I had a great morning today - I attended our local Boy Scout Troop 163 Pinewood Derby -

I was happy to see that before the event, several of the boys had completed their work for the pocket knife safety badge, and they all got presented the badges in front of the whole crowd.

In addition, the Scoutmaster who ran the whole derby was presented with a 100th anniversary scout knife from all the other scoutmasters. It just does not get any better, folks.

Here is a link to all the pics if interested -

I was once a cub scout. Funny thing most of it was because I wanted that knife. But my Dad ended up grabbing me a Wenger SAK and that was the end of that.

I have fond memories of my pinewood derby days.....I swear, I can still smell the wood from when my dad and I built my car.....

Those are some nice looking cars!

Now only if the scout left of the one getting the handshake would tuck his shirt in....;)

How do you get Pack #1 ?!?!

Have been chartered since 1910?

Looks like a great time. I love the Pinewood Derby....for the last one my son built a replica of the Mach 6 from SpeedRacer (with some help from his Grandpa). It really is a great father/son experience and we were in town visiting Dad so I had to share. :p

Kids nowadays have cars that are tons better than the ones we came up 'way back when'...!

I miss the Pinewood Derby! And still remember getting my "Totin' Chit" to carry a knife. First one was an Old Timer that's been lost for a long time.

I'm glad to see that knives are not banned from scouting events yet in the USA. Although, I fear, should Obama-rama and Billary have their socialistic way, it'll soon be like England. I think I'll link this thread in the British knife forums to give them a taste of how it was when Scouting was the place where children could learn how to use knives responsibly as important tools for survival and woods-craft.

Thank you.

I wish these pictures were required viewing by every nervous nellie that wants to Fisher Price the world. MOST especially the ones in England.

Good Job, kids!

My old man still has the pinewood derby car he helped me build when I was in cub scouts. :D

I still have my first place trophy from a Pinewood Derby, on a shelf in the basement. The car is long gone I'm afraid. I built it with my dads help and it is one of many fond memories I have of my childhood.

I helped a friend of the families son with his derby car, he was in a car accident a week before we were going to start on it, so I got all fancy with the mill, still a basic design, but I polished the axles and recessed the weights, even mounted a Ghost Rider head in the seat.

He of course helped spray paint it, 1st place that night, I was so proud I built a stand for it.

Agreed.

Don't Scouts shake with the left hand?

Hi wonkKI -

Yes - the traditional Boy Scout handshake from 1935 is the left handshake, but the Cub scout handshake is recognized as the two-finger with the right hand as demonstrated here:

CubScoutSignSaluteHandshake.jpg

The boys are required to shake hands after each race, and many use the two-finger scout handshake - but the troop is obviously lax on some of the minutia - like making sure shirts are tucked in etc - things that were absolutely required when I was a scout.

These are cubs, wolves, weebalos etc - and not fully fledged scouts I might add.

While the cub scouts marched in the Simi Valley CA annual parade down Los Angeles St. I shouted as I raised my Queen D2 canoe, "Keep your pockets knives scouts. Do not let the tradition die." Some in the crowd thought I was nuts, but I felt it was a good cause. This story gives me some hope.

God bless the Boy Scouts and those who take the time and effort to make these kids' lives better.

Wow! I almost missed this thread. Here was my Saturday morning....

I wish more boys got to experience this kind of fun. Cub Scouting can get a little corny at times, but almost without exception the boys have a great time and learn something about America along the way. I wouldn't miss it for anything.

Oh, and just to keep things "knife related" all of the boys you see in brown shirts carry pocketknives. Mine is the goofball in the middle

Hi DallasSTB -

Cool - thanks for the pics!

I like the 4-lane track - that is more what I was used to seeing before I saw these new 2-lane tracks.

best regards -
