For those of you who uese Yahoo Mail, I keep getting a pop-up flashing box that says: "THIS IS NOT A JOKE. YOU ARE THE 10,000TH VISITOR. [in a separate box inside the big box] Click here to claim."

If you click, which I finally did out of disgust, you find there is nothing to claim, just a pitch for a scam.

Yahoo claims to have no idea what I'm talking about.

Anyone else getting this pop-up box?

well, thats just dumb, i mean only 10k people viewed yahoo out of all this time?

dont click it again, run a virus check, you can run one from the internet at

www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

dont want your info stolen.

Sounds like an ADware bug has attached itself to your computer. Go in and clean up you history and cookies and see if it goes away. If not you may have to download a program to get rid of it.

DaveinNY is correct. It's adware and you should clean up what you can but I would recommend getting a program or tightening the security on your computer any way. If you happen to see more and more popups and the control panel on your start up menu disappears then this is bad.... really bad.

Thank you, brothers, but I suspect none of you use Yahoo mail,
right?

"Above the bar" is always an ad of some kind -- from Day One. This one is probably a lie and fraudulent, but would it stop yahoo? Doesn't stop the TV stations who run "infomercials" for "no risk" get rich quick scheme, miracle medical cures, and the "best" knives in the world. How about the "sonic" device that keeps vermin away - and doesn't in every test every performed by a third party?

There is also a pop up on Yahoo Mail that says I'm the "999,999th visitor" or "1,000,000th visitor." Same scam.

Just another, "You have won . . . ." scam.

Now, has anyone out there who uses Yahoo Mail got the same pop up?

I do use yahoo and do not have that problem. However, that does not mean that the popup is necessarily a result from using yahoo. There is an adware file imbedded in a folder on your computer. It probably happened when you clicked on a link or downloaded something. Do you use any extra software directly from yahoo? Do the popups come up only when you use yahoo? How about when you are on other sites or not using the internet? Have you adjusted your popup blocker?

get ad-aware and spybot. run both of them. are you running a firewall other than windows firewall? (xp)

Yes, it's an annoying ad. It has to be with Yahoo's permission, I think. I ran Spybot this morning and everything's fine.

I have Yahoo mail and I haven't seen anything like that.
I run Spyware Guard, Comodo BOclean, and I keep my popup blockers turned on.

How are you accessing Yahoo mail? I use Firefox almost exclusively.

Not sure. But note that this only happens on Yahoo Mail and in the above-the-blue-bar advertising area. Pretty strange that someone wanting to bore inta my puter resticts the effects to a single location in a single application.

My theory is that they pay Yahoo to show up there with theor scam "prize" deal. Next, they'll sell dope. (We're just a conduit!!!! Free Speech!!!!!!! Gotta make a profit !!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(The worst thing is in the Yahoo above-the-bar advertising area is the one with the three girls, including the one with the really wierd eyes that move suddenly. Yahoo Mailers will know what I mean. :barf:)

Yahoo charges you how much for Yahoo mail? Nothing? Or access to your monitor for their "marketing partners"? That's the price you pay for free internet services.

Add Ad-Aware to your Spybot. Together they will eliminate problems you don't need.

Tom I'm not familiar with the "in the above-the-blue-bar advertising area." as I don't have any ads on my Yahoo Mail webpage as you can see from this screenshot. I also have an ad blocker program that keeps all ads in limbo. I don't recall if it's in the Firefox Browser or an independent program but I can find out later today if you should wish.

I use Yahoo from time to time and havent seen the pop -up you are talking about.

first, turn on your pop-up blocker. I just use the one IE came with and have had no problems. If i encounter a bot or virus, my norton usually catches it, but the best thing i've found so far for free is Housecall by Trend micro. at www.antivirus.com .It can take forever if you have alot of files but isnt any more time consuming than running norton...etc. IMHO spybot and adaware miss quite a few bugs and bots. I ran them for awhile....but housecall picked up what they missed and cleaned everything out, it even got rid of a bug that eluded my nortons for a bit. Now i use just my norton program and run housecall from time to time to make sure there is NOTHING is on my computer.

I use Netscape too, the Pop-up blocker doesnt seem to be state-of-the-art.

Anyways, here's a solution that might be convenient for you. Dont pick your mail up at the yahoo website, use Outlook Express (or any mail program on your computer) to pick it up for you. Saves you the trouble logging in every time, too.

Outlook and other mail programs can get your mail via a Pop3 server if I remember correctly, and you can also send mail directly from your computer using a SMTP server. Setting it up should only take you about 10 minutes.

Firefox's pop-up blocker does pretty well. The only time I've ever needed anything else is for some troglodytic website that would not grant access to other browsers.

Just used Yahoo mail a few minutes ago and didn't get a popup. I'm runing the popup blocker that comes with IE and Kaspersky Internet Security. I have them both set to notify me of popups but don't allow them. Didn't see any popup warnings.

As BlazingGem sujested, run Kasperky and see what it comes up with. I'm betting you have some kind of Addware that monitors your online activites and creates ppups according to the sites you frequent. I used to have those problems when ever I came here and knifeforums. Kaspersky cleaned me up and has kept me clean since I started using it in May.
