This is sad.

Come on guys these children are easy targets for all you knife warriors!

After a recent spate of stabbings amongst the young community in England they do have some legitimate concerns. School should be a safe place for learning not worrying about being knifed.

This is the problem; In the UK several places have had outbreaks of knife-related crimes committed by minors due to some 'knife-carrying as a social status symbol' fad among teens. Several young people lost their lives or were seriously hurt and the community knee-jerked, automatically targeting knives instead of blaming irresponsible retailers and their own failure to instill respect for knives in their children. They've created a huge problem for themselves and found a simple solution, knife control. Just like after the Columbine tragedy schools banned trench-coats instead of putting effort into student outreach and peer guidance programs. It's just easier to blame the devil than admit you're working for him.

I thought Brits were considered smart?

They can't prevent things like this... wherever there are people, there will be trouble.

Oh, and it's not that difficult to make wood pointy ;)

"What's the point in defending people against knifes. Wasn't it just recently people used scissors and a pencil sharpener blade? Should we just ban them too? No. If people want to feel safe at school, maybe there should be better protection for victims and better punishments on bullies."

Anna, 13, Brighton

This girl has more critical thinking skills at the age of 13 than many adults: Objects aren't the problem, people are, and that's where the solutions lie, with people. She should run for office.

Several of the other comments refer to kids who "show off" with knives, acting stupid, intimidating others, etc... These kids are right, in a way, they just haven't made the leap in logic that Anna has from blaming objects to blaming behavior.

"I do think that there should be metal detectors at the doors of the school. We have a police officer, but I don't think he does much."

Chelsea, 12, Kingston

LOL! There's hope for this one...maybe she'll realize the value of self-reliance.

Yes well, what's also sad is that so many of these goody 2 shoes types don't seem to know that the plural of KNIFE is KNIVES not knifes(verb)

Education is a system of imposed ignorance (Chomsky)

Thank you, I would have loved to have written what you have there, but couldn't phrase it right.

Boing, people are the problem, not the objects, but it's easier politically to get people to rally behind removing objects instead of placing responsibility on the people who would use those objects against other people. I know you know that, it's just a sad thing about our 'nature.'

The simple solutions work fast, they seem effective, but all they amount to is treating symptoms instead of spending time to create lasting, valuable changes in American democracy.

Other things these people don't realize is that stabers are criminals and banning knives will do nothing but encourage them seeing as most go for the weakest people and they already don't care about the law. Also they dont realize how much other school supplies can be used as weapons scissors slash/stabbing, pencils stabbing, textbooks beating, human body beating and of course the scool favorite spoons eye gouging. Last year i almost got suspended for carrying scissors, something that i was once required to bring.

now i just need to get rid of the zero toleranc policy, at least pertaining to self defense(not allowed), and sharp things. 3 down 1,000 to go, wish me luck.

Thought my experience of school might be relevant. Once we reached eight years old we were expected to have a Victorinox pen knife in school. If we didn't carry one it was frowned upon! That meant that there were around 100 knives floating about in the school and I never came across an injury or fight involving a knife. This was in the UK around nine years ago and I don't think they have changed the rules at the school I attended.

You mean that the zero-tolerance ban on all firearms didn't completely eliminate all violent crime from the UK???

Now that the populace has been disarmed as far as firearms are concerned, the sociopaths of their society have no fear of attacking with pencil sharpeners and kitchen knives. When the brainwashed baby sheeple grow up, they can ban pocket knives, kubotans, and anything else a law abiding citizen may use to protect themself. When attacked, they can use harsh language to protect themselves. Until they ban that.

It's sickening to think that we sent good men and women over there in WWII to protect them from an authoritarian police state. Just so they can become one 60 years later.

Clockwork orange, anyone?
