This is why I don't carry the same knife in dress pants as in casual pants/shorts

These two photos of my rehandled Colonial barlow along side my Case pen illustrate why the Colonial only gets toted when I am wearing loose fitting shorts or jeans. It is both longer and taller (as seen in the first photo), and considerably wider (as seen in the second) than the Case which is often in my pocket during the day when dressed for work.

I prefer smaller, thinner knives for dress pants pocket carry, but enjoy using my larger ones when I am home, and can dress more casually.

Do you vary your daily carry selection in this or similar ways?

No, I don't vary. But I do carry a knife that works with any attire. :)

ditto this
i find that 2 layers and around 3.5" works regardless of what i am wearing

yes this is another plug for my texas jack, its just perfect in jeans or shorts :D

I'm starting to. I have a GEC trapper that I really like, but I'm finding that it doesn't work for my work clothes. I just put it away and pulled out the Case half whittler. The trapper will get carried on the weekends.

Why not, its one heck of a nice looking knife :)

I pretty much carry the same size knife all the time. Since I go for a smaller knife, it doesn't much matter what I'm wearing.

Carl.

For dress slacks, I prefer a thin and flat frame so I'll carry my Schrade 5OT or Buck 500. I preferred either of them to my camillus peanut type jack.

With baggy pants I prefer a knife that fills my hand better. Buck 112 or Ecolite 112

One or two blades, single spring, 3 1/4" to 3 3/8". All day, every day. Don't have to think about it, don't have to dress around it. If I anticipate needing more knife, I'll bring one along and will probably be dressed accordingly--not to fit the knife, but to fit the task that necessitated needing more knife in the first place. :)

For the most part I find the size of the knife a non-issue. As long as the knife is sub-4", I have no trouble carrying it. Maybe it's because I carry much bigger things in my pockets.

Cool idea Christian! I've carried my Case Backpocket that way after seeing Tony's video in a thread here.

But for work in nice slacks or khakis I carry a small knife. I have a desk job, and it's not really a knife friendly environment anyway so smaller is better. I've found my Boker pen and my Eye Brand Congress are just perfect.

I carry 3-4 at a time, including my Grandad Barlow, GEC sunfish, scout, etc.

I do this even in dress pants, because I am weird!

However, I can't take them into "work" as that involves a court house, and often the jail.

No security, no metal detectors, even when going into the jail, because they simply buzz me in.

I see people constantly wearing knives on clips in court, and quietly advise them to take them back out to the car.

I have never seen any "official" in the court notice, or care. '

However, I don't chance it, because if anyone ever got pissy, it could mean a criminal charge.

that sir is an innovative way to carry a knife!

Gotta love the saddleback leather! Awesome stuff, huh?

Slightly off topic; is the case pen basically the same size as the peanut, only in a pen form?

I love the looks of that Case pen. If -- God forbid -- I ever lose my peanut, I might consider replacing it with that yella pen (or with a GEC White Owl if I win the lottery).

In dress pants or khakis or whatever, I will always carry a smaller knife (9.9 times out of 10, it's my peanut). Now, in jeans, I'm apt to carry any of my folding knives. Luckily, I work via the internet, not cooped up in an office environment, can can carry any knife I want at any time. Still, on most days I carry the aforementioned peanut, but that's just 'cause I love it. Some larger options in my knife box that sometimes get carried are a Buck 55, Victorinox Tourist (84mm Spartan), a GEC 73L, Opinel no. 8, Victorinox Adventurer, or my vintage Schrade Old Timer 33OT middleman jack.

No, the pen is longer, but having only one back spring, it is also thinner.

Your question has already been properly answered, but I thought I would chime in with the actual stats of my two, and some comparison pictures.

length closed:
Peanut - 2.875"
Pen - 3.3125"

length with clip blade open:
Peanut - 4.875" (2" blade length)
Pen - 5.75" (2.125" blade length)

length with pen blade open:
Peanut - 4.3125" (1.3125" blade length)
Pen - 4.875" (1.3125" blade length)

width:
Peanut - 0.375"
Pen - 0.3125"

That right there is the issue for me. I can't stand having much stuff in my pockets. I don't even carry pocket change, and keep my keys in a jacket pocket or my bookbag. I know folks who pocket carry a revolver. I could never do that!

Even though its shorter, I find the peanut to be more comfortable in hand. I feel like the extra width give me a better purchase. I just have to get me another 'nut, as after almost losing my yellow one, I'm afraid to carry it due to sentimental reasons.

I do the same thing when in the office. My most carried knives are my case med stockman and my gec #61 congress. Those two just disappear into my pockets. Now my laptop case has either my #23 pioneer or my #53 cattle knife.

Great comparisons, Doug Add. Despite the smaller peanut having nearly the same blades as the pen, the pen has a much more user friendly length handle. That may not seem like much of a difference, but I can easily get more precision and leverage with a 3.3/3.4" than something under 3", and I don't even have large hands. The thinness of the single spring on the pen is icing on the cake.

For daily pocket carry, the slight extra length of the pen would not be noticed. I know there is cult love for the 'nut:D, but in a comparison of merits and demerits between the two, it's hard to argue against the pen.
