...or know how to whittle properly.

That's why he got the book, so he could learn to whittle.
You don't just automatically know how to do things and mistakes can be made while you learn how to do them 😉 people wanted to see pictures as he used his new book to learn to whittle, and that's exactly what he's doing.
Seriously, what's your deal ?

Happens! I was carving a pumpkin with a really tiny but super sharp peanut sized knife.

It was so sharp that it cut right through the pumpkin as I was lifting the knife upwards. The knife dislodged and split my thumb open. Took about a year for the nerves to regrow and not be all crazy on fire all the time.

Maybe he should have mentioned the book. Or posted the pic in the thread where the whole thing was discussed.

And/or read the book first before gouging himself.

A good book on whittling, no doubt, would begin with safe techniques and practices.

Didn't your mamma ever tell you, if you have nothing nice to say then S.T.F.U

I can see all those old timers and granpappys, on their porches and around campfires,
pocket knives out, whittling with their kevlar gloves on...:D

That sucks man, I've got my share of cuts but gloves are not the solution just techniques and tactics need to be evaluated.

Heal well bro and get back to whittling :)

Even the most practiced and careful individuals cut themselves from time to time.
I've been whittling for years but have had more than my share of 'oops'. The big thing for me was switching knives or blades(thickness, shape of blade, blade handle shape/thickness or type of grind) after using one for a while and not adjusting my pressure/technique/hold accordingly.
Hope your finger heals quickly.

Agreed. Definitely don't do gloves. Just practice and/or re-evaluate your technique(s) for next time.

Been there a few times and it's not fun.
Those cuts are deep and take a while to heal...

Use sharp tools enough you'll eventually cut yourself. (Use them not-so-often and you will cut yourself more)
Just takes one small mistake or a lapse in concentration.

We're humans, not robots, not every movement we make with our hands will be perfect.

Which knife where you using to whittle?
