This is why you should wear a glove when whittling

The knife he was gifted with his whittling book was a blue bone case stockman, so I'd imagine it was what he was using.
Weather the knife had a lock means nothing though , as it's the improper technique that caused the injury . I'll bet that were this injury caused by a failed locking mechanism the injury would be a lot worse.

As you say, and as I said, improper technique is to blame. Of course there is no need to learn proper technique through injury, especially when you have a book on the subject.

Again, it would be informative to hear what led up to it.

When I saw that picture, for a second I thought his finger was wrapped in bacon.

Don't wear gloves when whittling.

I would also love to know exactly what happened.

It sucks to have to learn through Injury , but sometimes you have people like my brother where this is the only way to learn 😉
this is exactly how he learned not to try and get corroded battery's out of an old D cell maglite by bashing it on the sidewalk.

A government regulation? :D
They wear them because OSHA says so.

I worked a crew cleaning up trash on the side of the road as a kid. The training said the hard hat, in part, was to stop high velocity car bits (tire blow outs, wheels flying of), rocks and stuff being thrown at you from a vehicle moving at 70 miles an hour.

I've been in a rubber storm from a semi truck blowing multiple tires at freeway speeds. I've been hit by an egg sized rock launched by a tractor trailer twice (once in the face while riding a motorcycle....Luckily I took the hit in the goggles, and not my nose or teeth).

I've also been hit by thrown trash, at 55 mph or so.

Another time I had a semi truck blazing past loose the whole tire, rim and all. That tire had a ton of force.

You have bad luck on the road 🤢

No, it's not about luck. Things do happen, and hard hats, hi-vis vests, and safety glasses are there to provide safety because someone cares about their safety:rolleyes:

Ever seen someone fall from a ladder? How about a hammer falling from a roof from wind? Or someone getting shocked from a faulty Comed line?

Bad things happen when you least expect it. I wouldn't tell one of the trades I manage that they have bad luck because they got hurt. Quite frankly, I'm offended by your post...

I avoid gloves when using knives in general, especially if I am using knives near my hands, body or something else I value. Gloves obstruct fine control. They reduce tactile sensation. They create unnecessary risk.

Learning to safely use knives, concentrating on technique and paying attention will be much more effective at keeping your digits intact, your blood circulating and your insides on the inside.

We are human. Accidents happen. Learn from them but make sure that you are learning the right lesson.

It took me one bad cut, to learn to never put any part of my body Inline with a knife edge when cutting anything, period. A simple rule that has kept me from repeating my mistake.

I don't wear gloves. Even the tightest/most form-fitting gloves obstruct important fine motor skills that you need when working with precision.

So true the dangers just being on the side of the road even when you're at a safe distance. It has nothing to do with luck of any kind. It is what it is. A close friend of mine is a New York State Trooper. His second year on the job he was on the side of the road assisting a disabled vehicle and out of nowhere a vehicle sped by and a giant slab of ice/snow flew off the roof (lazy jerk didn't bother wiping the roof of his vehicle) and smashed him in the head, caused some minor cuts/bruises. He wished he had a hard hat that day instead of a Stetson. It knocked him down pretty hard against the car. Unfortunately, stupid with the ice roof got away with it.

I have seen people fall from ladders. I've seen people fall off roofs too. I've seen an axe fall and almost split someone's head open. I've seen people fall through floors and roofs, it's happened to me. Have you ever dragged an unconscious body from a burning house? Don't preach to me about job hazards and job safety. I know hard hats can save your life too. Your offended by my post? First it was said as joke and for someone like you who spends so much time in W&C you should know what jokes are. Second I don't care what offends you.
Here's my hard hat

But you wont refund someone over a pocket clip?

It's a pity that this thread has gone into off topic argument. It has potential. Oh well.

There seem to be a lot of injury threads. Maybe we need more threads on proper cutting, chopping, slicing, skinning and whittling techniques in order to prevent some injuries :D

Threads are constantly derailing these days, what's up with that. There were a few safety/advice type threads but those, too, degenerated into nonsense. They had potential they were helpful, but totally imploded.

First warning issued for trolling. Anyone else? Stay on topic.

Here's my hard hat...

W&C has nothing to do with this. Regardless, I thought it was a bad joke.

And no, I've never dragged someone out of a burning house. However, I dragged my ex-gf out of a vehicle while waiting for first responders to arrive after wrapping her car around a tree... She instantly went into a coma and almost died. When she woke up she didn't remember me, still doesn't. We can share stories all day, and if you feel you need to one-up someone that's pretty sad. Not sure how any of this is even relevant...

It isn't relevant. When I say stay on topic I'm not joking. I don't care if you have a burning desire to respond to another post.

I'm not one upping anyone. You asked questions, I answered. None of this is relevant to this thread your correct. Just like the fella that brought up my clip incident which has been resolved but people like dwell on past subjects that they were never involved in.
