Just got this from Coop. Great job Coop.

My latest build, an abalone and blue amber camp knife with fully engraved (by me) nickle silver bolster and guard. Blade length 5 1/2 inches overall 10 inches. The blade is heat blued 1095 and 15N20.

that thing is gorgeous,,,, can you give a small detail about how the abalone handle is made,,,,
I have a hard time seeing where you get a handle that size from thin shells, thsnks

I did a tutorial on this once, it all went away when photo bucket started charging. Essentially abalone is a large thin dome shaped shell. In order to form a hidden tang handle I laminated the nested shells together in seven layers of shell. I then formed a box with four sides by mitering the laminated shell sections. There's 28 pieces of shell in that handle. So, if viewed from the end, the handle section would look like a rectangle shaped picture frame with the tang hole running through the center from end to end. Then the handle is formed from that.

Thanks everybody for your kind words.

Hi Laurence
Hello Mark! I was telling my wife about those fossilized Mammoth/Mastodon Tusks That you restored when we saw a rerun a week or two ago of you on that FIF episode you won. ———————-Could you kindly link that for me! In a accident this last Monday she fractured her hip and is at the hospital now! It would brighten up her evening! She watches FIF more than I do! LOL

What a privilege to capture. As I gazed DEEP into that abalone it all looked so 'easy'. I knew there was untold hours and layers involved. In 2000 years scientists will be studying this handle with questions like we study stonehenge or the pyramids. LOL!!!

It's THAT mysterious. And then the flowing effortless steel fitments and engraving. POW!

I stand in awe and praise.

Crazy beautiful piece, Mark. And I spent a bit of time just gazing at that abalone job you did on it, quite the effort!

Masterful artistry - well done Mark

Looks like some kind of angel dropped their knife in Alaska and now you’re trying to pass it off as your own work.

;) I’m just teasing but this is breathtakingly gorgeous.

First of all, so very sorry to hear about your wife. Hope she recovers quickly and completely.

The link for my episode has been removed from the internet, there is a lesser quality one on there somewhere, I will look for it and post it here. There is a bonus clip, here it is

.

Talk to you again soon.
