This just in

I did a tutorial on this once, it all went away when photo bucket started charging. Essentially abalone is a large thin dome shaped shell. In order to form a hidden tang handle I laminated the nested shells together in seven layers of shell. I then formed a box with four sides by mitering the laminated shell sections. There's 28 pieces of shell in that handle. So, if viewed from the end, the handle section would look like a rectangle shaped picture frame with the tang hole running through the center from end to end. Then the handle is formed from that.

Thanks everybody for your kind words.
thanks for the info!!-

Here's the new link, the sound is off, it makes me sound like a duck.

Somehow the playback speed was recorded too fast. I just clicked on the little 'settings' gear, and you can check playback speed at .75, which corrects it. (I like running vids quicker sometimes. It depends on how efficient the narrator is. Generally: TOO slow!)

Thanks for this Mark. You ROCK!

Thanks Coop

I don't think my mind is comprehending how you get a handle that diameter that looks like a single piece of abalone shell??
I can't even fathom how that is constructed???

Looks great, even if I don't know how made.

I laminated the shell together, then built a box with mitered joints. It's easy.:):)
