this machete sure got lost...

Nice write up, and now I have yet another place to explore in NJ.

thanks. i'm finding out there's plenty of nj members here. we need to organize a day hike/camp one of these days.

What do you use to sharpen it up with JV?

hey, jake. i've been using my dmt coarse/fine diamond diafold. right now the 1st half is still convex but the 2nd half is starting to be a v-grind.

i recently got the 8" dmt plates and i seem to have the urge to sharpen knives when i'm drinking/have the least amount of hand-eye coordination so eventually it'll become a mix of convex, scandi, and v-grind or whatever else my drunk hands can accomplish :D so far, it cuts paper clean so i'm satisfied.

Perhaps better question would have been "Is anyone using their Lite Machete hard? As in various tree chopping at least? And how does it fair?" It's hard to tell what constitutes use to some folks exactly.
I recall a thread recently by RAT. I believe he used his Lite to fell a 14" diameter tree in the name of saving a feline.
I do like the Ontario machetes and if there were a distributor in the US, I would get a couple of Gavilans.

JV3, that sounds like a great idea.

since mountain biking season is over i'm pretty much hiking every weekend. just pm me or riz_aaroni if you feel like joining and i'll organize something to round up the troops.

The ESEE lite machete is my blade period. I have owned many customs and production knives and machetes and still the Lite machete comes out on top. I was using a 3 blade combo with the lite machete being my main blade then a Mora and a SAK one handed trekker. I stop carrying the mora cause I almost never used it. The SAK and lite machete get the most use. When the ESEE-3 folder comes out I will give that a go to see if I will replace my SAK with the ESEE-3. I will probably add a Silky Saw to the combo as well but I am not sure until I buy one and test it.

My lite machete shipped out today. He's gonna get real cold and covered in snow soon enough. Poor guy, I'm betting he'll be up to the task though.

I always wondered about the machete - does it have the same high quality craftsmanship that the knives have? I love the fit and finish on the ESEE knives, but it seems that would be more difficult to get right on such a large blade.

It absolutely does not have the same superb craftsmanship of ESEE knives. ESEE knives are legends for a reason and this product is NOT part of the legend.

Sounds like a great tool what's the sheath like?

Nothing fancy. Stiff enough you can grab it by the end and it will stand straight up without bending over like a cheaper canvas sheath, but it's just meant to be a blade cover. Mine has held up fine but I might replace it with a GI style plastic sheath in the future. It fits perfectly.

crappy but perfectly usable.

no one's going to pay for a $200 machete - that's probably what it'll end up costing if it were to have the esee powdercoat and a rowen 1095 in that size. in my experience, the lite machete is far more useful than an esee-5 when it comes to actual woods survival-related chores. i'll pass on the "legend" :o

The ESEE Lite machete is the only ESEE I have for a reason. It is because it is more useful to me than the rest of the line up. I have always wanted a ESEE-4 plain edge but I have a SAK One Handed Trekker that handles all the small task I do and the Lite Machete handles the rest. I have been using a Bacho Laplander folding saw to see if I will add it to the SAK and Lite Machete. I think I might be adding it. I would love to have more ESEE knives but they would be used for a bit then probably start collection dust then I will end giving them away like I have some of my custom blades. After the hell I have put my ESEE Lite Machete through it has held up just fine.
