For Mike Turber and the Moderators,

Is it really necessary to automatically include that little annoying notation at the bottom of any edited post? I like to edit my posts, to make them clearer, the clean up typos, and mostly just to make them better. I have never edited anything because I thought I overstepped the bounds of Forum rules or common courtesy. Is it Really necessary to have that automated message included at the bottom of an edited post? I think it actually might be counterproductive, and discourage clarity of expression through editing.

Actually, I like the feature.......it tells readers who might have seen the uncut message that the current one was editted by the author...not censored by Management.

I don't want to see it go!

Brian, Mike T and the Moderators (sounds like a Good Band, no?),

Does editing by management happen all that often, if at all? If so, is there Another sort of message, e.g. "this message was edited by Management for innaproriate content" that is used when that happens? Or is the entire post simply deleted?

I think distinguishing the intent of editing Is important. And posting an advisement by managemennt that the post was edited for content would perhaps discourage abusive language and thought.

Perhaps we could have a one hour grace period to edit typos and grammatical mistakes before the 'edit' message would automatically be pasted on the post.

As someone who is proud of his/her wordsmithing, an edit notation should be a badge of honour indicating dedication to detail.

I mean : is it, really, that important ?

The edit message is essential. It tells who edited the message and when -- if the author edits the message a week after posting that's likely to be significant information, or if it's edited by a moderator (rare, but it happened once on another forum and caused a very big controversy ... let's not reopen that; it was all resolved and everybody is happy now ... it took a lot of struggle before that was achieved, though).

The usual reason for editing, of course, is a typo, and it's usually right after posting, and really nobody reads that message and says to himself, "Cougar made a typo, nyaa nyaaa!" It adds a little clutter to the screen but the cure would be far worse than the disease. What if someone posted something that got a lot of criticism and then edited it tracelessly and said, "You've misinterpreted me, I never said that ... I only said ..." I've encountered trolls who would love to play that game. What if moderators could edit messages and leave no trace? Not good.

If you have to edit the same message multiple times, by the way, you can delete the first "this message was edited" note the second time you edit the message, etc., so no matter how many times you have to edit the message (to get an image to work or something like that, it happens) you can leave it with only one "this message was edited" note -- you don't have to have a whole string of them. Even if you leave the whole string, though, nobody is likely to look down their noses at you for having to edit a message five times ... nobody cares.

Paracelsus,

Personally I've yet to edit any post other than my own. I've been known to do serial edits too but you'll never know as I edit out previous edit notations so it only reflects a single edit notation. I also agree with the others who feel that it is basically a sound feature. I never heard anyone else imply it intimidates or otherwise impedes edits.

Thanks Cougar, Brian, and Bald1,

I get it now. Thanks for the suggestion about editing edit notations. Works for me. Thanks

Hiya!
I'll leave the answer up to Baldy & Jim.
I just popped in to let you know (in case you haven't noticed) that you're able to remove multiple "this message edited by you" messages during your editing.

I'd guess that you already realize that by now, Paracelsus, but other folks reading here mightn't. (Yeah, that's a werd!!!!)

While editing, scroll down to the end of the text and you'll see your signature (if you use that option) and the text saying that you've edited it already. Just highlight it and delete it. It'll still say it once, but at least it won't say it for each time you've changed your mind.

Always willing to cloud things up, I remain,

I typically only edit to get rid of the "Sideways Scroll of Death" that makes you have to scroll right to read a message.

Other than that, I haven't had to. Other than that, it's better to have it show who edited the message than have it be a mystery.

I hate that Sideways Scroll of Death! I wish more people would go back and edit when they find they've inadvertently caused that. It's either an image that's too big for the screen or a url that's too long (why are there any urls that long??? It's a plot....)

Of course you can paste the thread into a word processor and change the margins so you can read it, which is better than scrolling back and forth with every line until you get dizzy and fall out of your chair, but it's still a nuisance.

If you want to edit your own message and not have the "This message was edited by" signature, edit the message, highlight all the text, right mouse click then select copy, then delete the message, then post new message and right click in the body and paste in your previous message and edit it. Simple, eh?

Chief, Thanks. But as Senator points out, that won't work any more. There will still be a voided post remaining. I am satisfied with the way things are thanks to the helpful advice We have all received from our kind, caring, and compassionate fellow forumites. By the way, as a Mac Fanatic, I don't use a Right click. I only have One clicker.

Cougar, perhaps you should add seatbelts to your chair?
