This place is more addictive than crack...

You know we all appreciate good knives and enjoy talking/using/collecting them, but I've no doubt that some people can get pathologically addicted to this process just as people can get abnormally wrapped up in gambling, sex, etc.

Mgoffrieau who started this thread said he went from having a few knives to buying a half dozen or so in his first few weeks on BFC. Unless he just loves to trade things through, keeping previous purchases moving along the pipeline as new ones come in, this speaks of serious addicition potential.

Matthew,

You have got to lighten up a little.

Is this addictive: yes. Is it unhealthy... well probably no more so than any other hobby. What ever amount of time and moneys get funneled into this hobby would probably end up channeled to some other hobby if you eliminate knives.

As hobbies go this one is fairly benign. Personal risk of injury from collecting knives is far less than from participating in extreme sports, or photographing wild rinos in Africa. Even if the market turns against you there will still be far more residual value in your collection than if you had spent the money in Vegas, or on Broadway. And you can't knock the people.

Well, matthew, thanks for the concern, but I've things under control (no, really, I do!). I don't have any credit cards - I only use cash, checks, and debit cards. That's one way of keeping things in check. Also, I do plan to sell the knives I no longer want. As far as my initial splurge, that was a one time reaction to being bombarded with all this knife information. I doubt I'd ever buy that many knives in that short a period again. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hello again... Not2sharp, I agree completely, that was my point. People can and sometimes do go pathologically overboard with just about anything, hobbies being among the most well known, and knife collecting is not exempt even if relatively benign.

Indeed I have to wonder about myself sometimes. Though I purchase fewer than a half dozen knives each year, I've been at this some 7 years now which means I've got something like 30-40 knives most of which rarely see the light of day! Going back over my original "mission parameters" for knife buying I find I only really need about a dozen of those knives, yet at this very moment, I have two customs on order, one a true custom (in the sense that it will be a one-of-a-kind made to my spec). I could try to sell some of the older ones, but they've all been "users" at one time or another and as such don't hold as much value to other buyers.

Mgeoffriau, I'm glad you've got this under control. I just wanted you to know that as much as we all love to talk up this hobby I think we've also got to watch out for one another on occasion and try to encourage a sane and balanced approach to this as well as any other hobby.

Hell I don't know about you, but I now know the first names of every postal employee, UPS truck driver, counter personnel, along with the infamous and dredded FEDEXHome delivery person in this county and most of the next. I should start buying up stock just from my addiction. Trades Anyone? HAH! Just can't help myself.

There are different levels of "addiction". I am still hovering somewhat short of "ruining your credit with inappropriate purchases".

Then there's the grandmaster event, "selling your extra kidney to finance a custom".
