This plague that went down upon us called g10

I just handled a Police 3 today... I have to say, I like Spyderco's G10. I have a S&W that has G10, but it's nothing like the one I handled today (I should have known...)

Ha ha... I too have a drawer full of G-10. Apart than Spyderco, my other favourite manufacturer is EKI so you can see I have a problem.

That said... I do think G-10 is the most practical of all handle materials. I don't like the 'cold' feel of aluminium and it is way too slick as well.

Stainless has a similar problem. So I guess we 'stuck' with G-10 for now.

I do have a great fondness for canvas micarta, but that is seen very seldom on production knives, being reserved mostly for customs... and I kinda like it that way.

Although, Spyderco has done some nice pieces with black linen micarta in the past, a very classy material indeed.

I must disagree with your stance on the four-way clip though. To me, this is a 'must-have' on a knife now. I have two Spydies with STR clips on them, but the hassle and expense of having it done mean its doubtful I will have any more.

So I for one am very grateful that Spyderco are giving us the option of positioning the clip where we like it best.

Gine---I like all the texturing that is being done with Micarta and G-10. It's going to get interesting! ;)

G-10 is strong, here it is, two one half inch boards lifting the front end of a 4,000 pound fork lift, That may be why the Manufacturers like it, almost indestructible.

So we are supposed to run over our Spydies with fork lifts. Now its starting to all make sense.

The only thing I don't like about the 4-way clip is how it makes the knife stand out (it doesn't conceal the knife very well). It's always too far down and then you've got 3 shiny screws showing plus screws for the handle due to the clip not being high up enough (or it could be the pivot screw showing if tip-down).

Other than that, it's a very good clip. It stays on the pocket very well, yet it's easy to attach and remove.

 HUH? The four way clip carries the knife quite a bit lower than the one way clip of the regular Police. I'll grant you it carries higher than the lowrider wire clip, though.

You can do the same thing with canvas or linen Micarta, which are much more comfortable to the hand, cheaper, have way more color options and look much nicer than G10.

G10 is truly awesome, but it's still just a fad. Can't wait for them to come out with a phenolic resin laminate using kevlar, if they haven't already done so.

We tried some kevlar composites a number of years ago. The kevlar kept getting wrapped up in the machining cutters.

Other than sounding cool; what would a kevlar laminate offer over G-10?

I ask because if memory serves there was/is a fad for kevlar rifle stocks but the best rifle stocks stick to the boring old man made materials like fiberglass...

That's like asking what advantages does G10 offer over linen or canvas Micarta. Not much, if anything at all.

But it sounds really cool.

I shot my kevlar knife but the bullet didn't bounce off, is it covered under warrenty? :D

Depends on whether the knife is billed as "bullet proof" or simply "bullet resistant."

And using FMJ ammunition, as I suspect you did, is simply cheating.

G-10 offers a few advantages over micarta:

It is stronger. (tensile strength per thickness).
It offers more texture (peel-ply)
It is more stable. (we've had micarta shrink depending on humidity).

Micarta has a nicer "feel" (I think it feels "softer" in my opinion).
Micarta has paper, linen and canvas variants.
Micarta has more colors available, but for some reason, not many are being made these days.

We're planning on canvas micarta for the 'Temperance2. (brown)
We are using micarta on the Goddard and Viele collaborations. (white ivory for the first runs)

Unless the handle geometetry allows for rounded edges to reveal the "grain" of micarta the majority of what makes micarta special is lost....imo. If it is a flat slab, it might as well be whichever slab of plastic is best...apparently G-10.
