This thread is for people that use knives...

Gimme a break hard use is boning and skinning 2 or 3 elk with a 4 inch trapper cause its what you had .

...you have obviously not had to dig an IED up through asphalt.....

If I knew I had to do that with my blade I would bring one of those small garden shovels.:D

Me: "Tell me where your Director's Cut Edition is..."

I also peeled the flesh off a grapefruit today and also fought a 1,200LB walrus...

(ok, so I didn't have to fight a walrus... not today anyway...)

That's about as hard-use as things got for me today. YOU (the OP) have a very difficult job. Stay safe out there, fella! Cheers! :)

I know I have asked this before but aren't you at all worried to have a knife that expensive where you are? I just think others would try to steal them.

"hard use" is only what you make it. certainly, you had a job to do and you had the proper equipment for that job. disarming bombs is not the typical run of mill thing anyone else would use a knife for. but, I would imagine lots of other knives not quite as expensive or as yours would have filled that job just as good.

I would consider something such as a machete hacking through a jungle full of bamboo about as hard as any knife(if you even consider it to be one) would ever need to be used for, less some emergency situations.

knife is a tool and it's meant to be used. "hard" or not really doesn't matter. just use the damn thing. if you just like collecting that's fine too. but, remember that pretty doesn't mean better. especially for someone that actually uses their knives.

Thanks for your service BombBoy

You'd think an elk pro would think to bring a better tool for the job if he knew he was gonna likely be skinning and boning multiple elks.... just sayin... :p

The things I did in the Corps with a leatherman would surprise some. I didn't have any of the modern hard use folders and carried a TACII and KBAR for a fixed. They served their purpose for sure. In 20 years I never had another Marine steal my equipment. As a matter of fact the only thing ever stolen was a pair of levis out of the barracks dryer. Some dick needed them worse than me!

used my ffg zdp endura to reduce 12 cleaning agent boxes for trash . for [charlie mike] the last time i saw 2 marines kick a howitzer dud it blew off a arm on one & a leg on another . one died, any officer with the advice to kick stuff should set the example. This cheap Chinese knockoff of a Rambo knife (cutting edge back then!) was purchased out in town when I got to my first duty station, Camp Pendleton. A few days later we were in 29 Palms for 4 months and it did everything; cutting, chopping, slicing, dicing, prying, poking, stabbing, throwing, cutting up food and of course digging. Lots and lots of digging.
USMC EDC.JPG

It was in my bag when Noriega took over Panama. I was in the Embassy that night. It was also on my web belt when the stealth bombers went over my head on their way to Baghdad. (although I didn't hear or see them because it was dark; and the whole stealth thing)

I think that knife cost about $10. Still have it today!

Uh Rah!

Hard use, you say? De-animating IEDs, huh, Mister Toughguy?

Well, I flicked open my Kershaw Blackout about 2200 times last night while watching American Idol.

So whose the tough guy now, huh? Who really knows hard use?

Well, I guess its not me. :)

There aren't many forms of abuse my brother doesn't put this Boker through. He's a landscape contractor and this is basically the only knife he uses daily. He even used the butt of it to scrape broken glass out of a sliding glass door track.
For an under $40 knife I've been very impressed with it.

Yeah that sounds about right.

That stuff should be left to Butter Bars and Boots.

I used to stay far away from that suff.

Cut the hell out of some guy’s arm that had me in a head lock.
Stabbed a guy wearing and old flak jacket as well. ( whit a tomahawk)
Opened up cocaine, marijuana, heroin and ice packages for sampling.
Pried open a few doors and locks.
Cut branches.
Slashed a lot of tyres.
Cut the head of a rattle snake.
Opened a few bear bottles.
Butchered a few pigs ( I make “carnitas” for my men) and cut vegetables for tacos.
Cut of a lot of plasticuffs.
Cut the clothes of a few injured people.
Cut clothes and rope to make tourniquets.
No IED’s, but I will be working in Juarez, id there have been 5 car bombings in the last two years. Maybe I will get unlucky.

Be safe out there BombBoy.

Not anymore, but I used to use my knife quite a bit when I worked in a factory. It was a bit of an eye opening experience.

Few conclusions I drawn from my experience:

1) I'm no longer in love with the choil that spyderco puts on their knifes
2) Super steel is only super if you play around with them, 60hr work week make sharpening a chore.
3) Long blades are better for making longer cuts (duh). But when you're opening 8ft high boxes, a inch longer blade makes for less cuts at the end of the day, results in less tiring day
4) Don't lend your "hard-use" knife to people, because they'll break it easily.

The job for the knife is simple enough: cutting boxes, a few skids a day. Opening zip ties, palletizing wraps, scraping hose fitting clean of fat and sugar (with the spine of the knife, not the edge) etc.

Never had to pry door opens and such.

My EDC at the time was a mini manix. I carried that thing with me everywhere I go, it also see duties on the weekend cleaning game and occasionally I use it on fish as well.

Jeebus!! Sounds like a helluva day!

Used my knife to "disassemble" a cat house for the Mrs and then hacked up a small dead tree so both could fit in some trash bags. :)
