When I was crabbing with my son today someone caught this Sunstar and took it home to eat, maybe if I was starving on a tropical island I would but I don't think I could eat this if I had other options !

yea..they get up to about 1m from tip-tip if that's like the ones in the PNW
 
Sorry, but from someone who knows absolutely nothing about salt water, how in the world would one prepare something like that??

Very carefully :D I actually dunno. I saw a couple of seafood joints that sold sea star and sunstar but I didn't have the guts:o
 
That looks similar to a crown-of-thorns which is poisonous. Have someone report back after you eat it.

The one pitdog was showing looks like Pycnopodia helianthoides, just a plain ol' sunflower star

and hawkings: the ones we saw when I was in Oregon grow up to 1m from tip-tip...so, at 16", this one is small...
