this weekends camp chore, chicken slaughter

Great post.
I raised chickens 4-5 times now.
Great way to teach the kids about food and basic butchering.

 Yup, all the kids were out seeing how it's done, I've got 5 youngins' ages 2 to 9 and they are getting the kind of upbringing I always wished I had. For the last 5 years I've been trying hard to get back to the roots of it all, growing all your own food and everything, it's been a hard transition but I'm thankful for every lesson, and try to be appreciative of every day I'm living.

Put the bird in the crock pot this morning, if you'll excuse me I need to go eat. :D

Great thread. We are, after all, hunter-gatherers. Home raised or wild harvested meat is many times better than the corporate production farm raised stuff.

Without access to a farm myself how would one go about learning how to kill and dress their own food? I'm a city boy and never learned these skills and would love to do so.

Its not uncommon for people from either rural or urban communities to purchase livestock like chickens and pigs directly from local farms. I have brought home chickens, pigs and lambs from local farmers for reasonable prices then either slaughter after getting home or fatten and finish them up in pens until they are ready for going under the knife. I am sure you could find some reputable farmers as they need the income too and get good protein in exchange.
