Thomas Jefferson's knife.

Naaaaaaa It's a hole punch. Considering the age of the knife I'm pretty sure if they wanted a screwdriver they would have made a slot head screw driver. I can see in a pinch, if you left your Quill knife at home, grabbing a turkey feather and using a blade to cut a quill pen. Otherwise, Naaaaaa:D

Not TOO dissimilar to this knife, owned by T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia).

Hi Jack
Looks to me like these Famous folks could have used a quick course in knife care and use :D
That's another strange tool sitting on his pinky finger. I'm NOT saying what it could be :D

Have a great weekend Jack.

Best regards

Robin

Hi Robin,

You're not kidding! :D

Tell me about it Robin, I'm just struggling to make out a tang-stamp on a knife that's right in front of me! :D

Hey, that's a great idea, Robin! I think my wife has a set-up like that for her various crafts; I never thought of re-purposing it for my own nefarious ends! :D

It makes stuff BIG, like my young eyes used to do :D I'm playing with some Mammoth ivory inlay work, the magnifier helps a LOT.

Best regards

That looks excellent Robin. I use a magnifying glass a lot, but it is just a simple pocket glass. The problem I'm having at the moment is that one or two of the letters of the name on the tang-stamp are actually worn away! I may be asking for help! :D

I didn't realize this at first, but you actually took photos through the magnifier, right, Robin? That might also be a boon for me, given that I'm rather photographically-challenged. (Of course, it probably "magnifies" the problem of shaky hands when pushing the shutter release, which is probably my biggest challenge with photos.)

I can sure relate to the bad vision problems. Lately, I’ve found that things I can’t see at all with the naked eye (left) or a normal scan (center) become clear when scanned at “cat-fur resolution” (right).

I have a geologist's hand lens which provides 10x viewing. You hold the lens up close to your eye (thumb on cheek bone), and move the subject (rock, knife tang) closer until it's in sharp focus.

Some people try to hold the lens away from their eye, like a magnifying glass. Don't: the field of view is much wider and easier to use when you hold the lens close to your eye. This shows the technique:

Geo Hand lenses are available in a variety of powers and qualities online and in nature shops, but 10x or 15x will take care of pretty much every magnifying need you'll have. And you don't have to get the most expensive on the market (triplet lenses) either — those are for professionals.

Put it on a lanyard, and take it with you to knife shows and flea markets — you'll be glad you did!

That looks pretty good  I always have my humble magnifying glass in my pocket, but try to only use it if really necessary when buying, as I find the sight of a glass puts the asking price up! :D

i agree there is the risk of "looking pro." But on the other hand, a lens can sort out a rusty tang-stamp and possibly save you from buying a clunker. Deploy as the situation calls for, I guess.

Yes indeed  I usually make some remark about needing to get new specs - which is 100% true! :D
