Ok, I'm wondering if passarounds are becoming passe'. Part of the agreement of the passaround is that you post a review of the knife.

But, a steadily increasing number of people signup, receive it, then pass it on without doing the review. Which honestly, is a significant motivation for doing the passaround in the first place.

Yeah, I know people are busy, but since the reveiw is part of the deal they agreed to, maybe they shouldn't sign up if they are too busy to write a few lines about the knife?

I'm beginning to think some may consider this a free ride rather than a community endevour.

Other than gentle reminders, what should be done? Should I start not allowing people that don't do the reviews?

The only solution I see is a shorter passaround.

Somehow, the "love is lost" if it goes longer than a month or so.

Best of luck, Dave.

Pen,

I guess That could be a factor.

But, I resent having to make accomodations for those that are either too lazy, or too busy to uphold their end of the bargain.

Sometimes it's not even that, Dave.

Stuff just happens - even to nice people.

Could it be that having a long passaround sets people up to forget about it? Or makes it easier to hang on a little longer since you've been waiting for 2-3 months already?

I can't say for sure, but that's the feeling I've got from the passarounds I've been involved in.

The list should be short enough that there's still "hunger" to see it, or be involved - and yet long enough to accomodate as many as possible.

My experience is that the reason smaller groups of people are more effective than larger groups is that a smaller group is "self-policing" - that is, they get to know each other and watch out for each other. I think the same could apply here.

I don't think that established rigid rules or a having subjective selection process is the answer. That will take the fun out of it. It needs to stay spontaneous, surprising, and delightful.

I don't think passarounds will ever be passe'. There will always be newcomers that will get a kick out of it. And it helps strengthen the community aspect here at bfc and that's something we all appreciate.

Keep up the good work.

Dan

Maybe you need to trade one of them passaround knives for a fresh 2X4!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

If that's part of the agreement then they should follow through. On the passarounds like Steven Roos has been doing, everybody chips in to buy the knife, and I guess what they do with it during their time is their own business, though it would be nice to see more reviews and comments.
If you're sending your own personal knives, then it's up to you where and to whom you send your property.
It's impossible to MAKE people write a review, but if they agree to, and don't...personally I wouldn't include them in future passarounds.
From what you're saying, it seems like you're trying to provide a service, by allowing people to check out a knife without actually buying it, in return for the review. That's great, because it can give others a view of what the knife is all about, and provide feedback for the rest of us who might be interested. At the same time, it's sad that people would take advantage of your time, money, and good graces.
I can see why you'd not want to continue doing something that starts out as a good thing, but ends up leaving you disappointed, and feeling like you've wasted your time.
If I felt that I was putting forth time and effort just to be taken for granted, I wouldn't do it anymore. BTDT.
Have to stop before this turns into a relationship counseling session:p
