Here's a quote from Benchmade's new website

. And now we retrace those steps with the new Model 42 with its numerous appreciable improvements. For starters, the Wee-hawk style blade is secured to the handles with screw-head pivot-pins, making the possibility of changing out blades a reality (Benchmade plans to make optional blade styles available in the future), and the pins are heat-treated and larger than previous ones.

I'm not sure what it all means, but I intend to find out.

Hasn't Benchmade always planned to make "optional blade styles available in the future"? And there is no given date, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Personally, I think this interchangable blade thing is all a money scheme to get people to spend, while lowering the cost for Benchmade to produce a whole new balisong (handles are the most expensive part of the BM42).

Another thing, you would most likely have to mail your bali to Benchmade for them to change the blades for you (the pins are pressure fitted, and are very difficult to remove manually). This will cost the consumer some more green. And don't forget, there is always a risk of mail theft. Some people actually target packages sent back to factories and slice them open, just to steal your knife.

That's only been posted on their site for about a year! Hope something positive comes of it!

Yeah, I have to agree with Sabo. That has been there since they first mentioned the BM42. I already asked them and they said the torx pins were there so they can replace blades in case if they were broken, not just for the sake of changing blades.

Wouldn't it be possible for Benchmade to make some sort of a (cheap) press for home use? Well, it's just a thought...

I doubt if very many people would ever bother to change the blade on a Benchmade. The Taiwan knives with the Rostfrei blades are all interchangeable, and I have never had anyone buy two of them with the intention of changing the blades around. For example, no one has ever bought a kris blade and a dragon handle, or anything like that. Thanks, JohnR7 www.BalisongKnife.com

Actually, I recently bought a rostfrei in order to change the blade out with my POS Bear but I couldn't get the pins out of either so I gave up.

>>I couldn't get the pins out of either so I gave up.

If you get a good pair of american made vice grips, it's pretty easy to pull the pins out with them. I can see why the junk coming out of China continues to go down hill with only minor exception. Because there tools are junk, so the product they put out is junk.

Your work is only as good as your tools, and if you take care of your tools, they will take care of you. A good american made tool will last for at least two if not three generations.

The new china butterfly knife really is an improvement over the old ones. Even though the metal on the handle is very soft on it. For the little bit of extra money, a Taiwan Butterfly is a lot better of a item when it comes to the material that goes into it. Also, Jaguar makes a pretty good knife, comparted to what everyone else over there is doing.

i think i read somewhere that u couldnt change the blades on a bm42 more than a couple of times because taking the pins out does somthing to the handles dont know for sure though

For a company that won't let you take apart one of their regular knives [without voiding the warranty], you don't think they are seriously going to let you take apart a 42 to put a new blade in when the mood strikes you, do you?

i emailed benchmade and asked them that very same question they said u would have to send in ur knife to get a different blade put on it

Yes, and it is a selling point they used to market this knife with the implication being you could do it yourself. I knew that was a dream from the start as they loathe Customers taking their knives apart.

You know, this is just another sad twist in the equally sad tale of the whole "Bali-Song Saga" surrounding Pacific Cutlery and then Benchmade.

What BaliSong fans desperately need is another large, reputable manufacturer to step up to the plate.

Sadly, that probably won't be Microtech now.

Competition equals innovation, etc., etc., we have discussed that time and time again and as long as Benchmade has no competition with this genre of knife, they will continue to seek the lowest common denominator.

I happened to visit Benchmade today (Always fun) and asked about interchangable blades. The answer is that that is old wording on the website and they're going to correct it shortly.

Interchangable blades may not be in the works, but new blade profiles are. Sorry, I can say no more.

I picked up the new 2001 catalog and saw some of the new folders too. All very nice stuff. But, they've still not taken my advice and made a tip-down axis lock. Boo... Hiss...

Rummors of the AFCK's death are premature. It get's a slight tweak to a new, oval hole in the blade. I'm not convinced... Messin' with the AFCK is spoilin' for a fight in my book.

The Nimravus is still searching for a sheath. Excellent knife. (Hint, guys: there's this new "space-age" material out there that makes great sheaths. It's called "leather.")

And, Mr. Elishewitz has contributed an interesting neck knife for those who might like one.

Gollnick,

Sounds like a fun trip. Did they give any ballpark dates for the new blade configurations?

I too want to see a tip up AFCK. I wouldn't count out the oval hole right away though. Still, its not enough reason for me to buy another.

It might be just me, but I think most people already seen pics and stats on all the new BM's.

New profiles in a complete knife? Hey, that would work! Maybe a few of the classic designs that we all love so much and then kick it up a notch with something new.

Bet that we would buy them all.

Question: Why is there sudden doubt that Microtech will join in on the Bali-train?

Sabo, don't worry, buddy. Microtech is already planning to make a small custom run of pimped out balisongs... if this goes well, which I'm sure it will, I'm confident that Microtech will decide to go into production models.

Sadly, like Don said, this won't be happening too soon. MT already has a bunch of new knives on their agenda, and the balisong isn't really a top priority to them right now. But the wait will be worth it...

Well, through a legal opinion, the State of Florida has virtually banned Switchblades. That is, unless it is reversed.

MT is somewhat in the tank over the LCC with the high cost of machining on the Titanium Bolsters and are switching to aluminum to lessen the cost, but not the price.

MT is apparently going to make a credit card blade that is different from the SpyderCard or the SOG Access Card, but it is still another folding credit card knife.

Tony Marfione does not "do" Forums, so he does not have any idea you people exist and instead of tapping this rabid market, feels content to make what he is making [GOOD!] and a credit card type knife [BAD].

And it is not that I don't like the MT Card Knife, I would buy one...but when you cast off the idea of a Bali-Song because you think no one is really interested in it, yet you are going to try to compete with Spyderco and SOG on something they already have in production...you get the idea.

By the way, if MT decided to make a BaliSong, if the Switchblade Ban is finalized and does in fact become the Law of the Land in Florida (I expect they might fold if that happens) Benchmade would have a serious run for their money...and the BM #42 is no match for what can come out of Marfione's shop.

[Still stinging from the Benchmade excuses on why they ended a whole line of fine knives]
