Thought experiment: reissued Beckers not made by KA-BAR

Really? I don't actually own any Bark Rivers and don't know anything about the company... I've been really close to getting a Bravo 1 several times... Can anyone expand on this? All I've ever read said that they're a good company with excellent fit and finish.

Not trying to gossip or anything here... but if there's a legitimate reason I should avoid Bark River, I'd like to know.

I think, if BeckerHeads & like folks are given enough lead time before a "sprint run" was made (so we could alot the money), they would all be sold before the first one was cut. Now a custom shop would be an AWESOME thing but i am SURE we would pay for it. If the buyer could pick their steel & BK # of blade, i would ask someone to pinch me because i MUST be dreaming !!!! BK-6 custom would be my choice, with a finger choil & jimping, either 5160 or 1095, i wouldn't care.

Im not sure what Mike Stewart has done (and Im curious myself) but I will say that the dislike of him is shared by many. I have heard people speak poorly of him all over bladeforums and other various knife/survival forums.

Geezaloo... that's... interesting.

Okay... well then I'd still like to see a full convex, 3V Brute with a choil... done by.... er... someone else known for making awesome 3V and convexed blades? :D

I'd like to see a custom option for most of the Becker line, not just the out of production/never produced (BK8) ones.
I, for one, would like to see a convex 1095 BK7 with orange G-10 and an H1 (or N690) BK14 for fishing and boating.
A person wouldn't have to twist my arm too much to take a Reinhardt Kuk or BK8, either. :D

well, you could pay someone to do those mods.

similar works runs around $250 and up from some makers. would you pay that? KaBar knows most people won't even consider it, and thus, they won't do it.

KaBar does economy of scale. perfect a product, make lots of it, with good enough (perhaps better than good enough) materials, lots of it, sell at good price.

they kinda noticed the San Mais didn't sell, nor the BK10 special edition. the BK77 specials / blems sold FAST, because the price was outrageously good, but i don't see that happening again.

This is true- but the question is- how much would it cost in production? If each component was made in a decent amount it would be fairly inexpensive, and I think that it has the possibility of selling well.
EDIT- think Buck custom shop or benchmade build-a-Grip.

custom != production

totally unlikely to happen. as it is, each knife is hand assembled... they're VERY busy. no idle hands. they'd have to pull someone off to spend time tinkering with a custom build. $$$. based on talking with people at KaBar, i can't see this happening.

don't know about buck or benchmade. perhaps they have more free time? :D

Buck Custom plays to the Traditional crowd that likes natural/rarer materials. Benchmade Custom plays to the Tacticool crowd looking for tacticool bling.
I don't think Ka-Bar will cater to either crowd. The knives are about function. Aside from improving scales to micarta, the needle won't move much.
I'm with Bladite. I don't think it'll happen in my lifetime.

I don't think anyone is really expecting KABAR to do the custom shop thing... KABAR has perfected what they do. They make quality working knives at a great price point.

What I think would be cool... if it were possible... is to maybe partner with one of the other manufacturers that does the more custom blades... more exotic steels and handle materials.... and have them do some of the Becker designs in these more exotic materials.

I do think there would be a market for it... but I agree that it's outside of the scope of KABAR's business model. I don't know who would be a good company to partner with... but I think it would be interesting to see, for sure. We all know Becker blades have some of the best ergonomics around... so even high end models would probably sell to a certain crowd.
