Hi all, just thought I'd introduce myself.
I've been lurking and learning for a bit now but hadnt gotten around to making a profile or what not untill today. I'm 28 and live in alberta canada. Ive been interested in knife making since I was in my teens. made a couple of unusable knives out of mild steel from HD (before I knew that the steel from HD woulkdnt make a serviceable blade)using files and sand paper. chalk it up to experiance for the inexperianced. recently got my hands on a whack load of 440c in various thickneses and widths, along with all sorts of other knife making schwag. including a 2"x 10" contact wheel grinder from a retired knifemaker friend of my in laws and will soon be making a bunch of dust (and possibly a knife or 2 lol )
Ive read all the stickys some of them multiple times and from what I can figgure I wont be able to HT the 440c myself... if anyone is willing to or know's where a guy can get this steel ht'd plz help a newbie out
thnx

Check with ROB! (baldeforum user name) from Ranger Knives. He has an online store, is located in Alberta, and offers heat treating for stainless blades:
https://www.knifemaker.ca/index.html

His on-line store is down temporarily, but I just talked to him on the phone and he says it might be back up tonight. He has a good selection of steel, belts & handle materials.

Welcome to the cult!
Bruce

Well I guess Rob has been outed. Sorry if you wanted to remain in the closet my bald friend. :D

Welcome!

I also recommend Rob!, I have bought from him four or five times, and each one was a great experience. Very helpful as well.

My recommendation is to start using your real name, now. In time to come you will realize that getting your "name" out there will help with recognition which if in the future you want to sell a few knives, will help with.
Lots of great grinding and if I can help off the site my email is niro@telus.net I have a flat rate charge phone for North America if you want to talk that I can call you on. There are lots of makers in Alberta as well as here in B.C. Frank

thanks for the warm welcome frank and all the others who have posted :)
is there any way I can change my forum name to my real name? or would I have to make a new profile (is that allowed?)

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Questions about forum policy go in Service & Support. A lot of the questions are answered in the FAQ and in the rules for membership, both up at the top of the page.

You can get a name change for $10. As few posts as you've got, you're probably best off registering again under a new name.

thanks again for the welcome everyone...
