Thought we split 'gear' off into another sub forum

When you see one, hit Report Post. The more we move to the new sister forum, the sooner people will understand.

We just don't have the working mods in W&SS to keep track of it.

Just wondering, but was there a problem with having them both together??

I haven't done a scientific study but it seems like the amount of viewers has gone down since the split.

Post that in Tech Support if you like, but there was a lot of discussion about it already, to get to where we are now.

Besides, what's the big deal? We aren't actively jumping all over the place.

I will say, without numbers, we cannot know what the level of participation is or why. Some manufacturer forums have taken to wilderness and gear discussions, too.

When I originally suggested another subforum, it was to keep all survival content here in the survival forum, with a separate outdoor forum for pics, trip reports, and things like camping, hiking, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing, and whatever else people enjoy doing. Seemed like a simple way for people with a wider range of activities to have a place to discuss them.
Making the new subforum strictly about gear with "survival" in the title did the exact opposite. It split related content, and made everything more complicated, so that it's harder for people to decide where to post, more tedious for you mods to manage, and still doesn't invite new discussion of outdoor sports.
The way it is now, all the PSK stuff, and survival-specific gear will get moved away from the very people whose interest it holds, while recreational content remains here, in spite of minimal interest.

I hear you Esav. Whatever y'all have figured out is OK with me. Just my experience that the more you carve things up sometimes the less participation.

However in the past I thought the forum was sort of getting junked up by knifemakers who were essentially just posting another "For Sale" thread in WSS because outdoor knives are selling - so I can sort of see a place for seperating out the gear to a degree. Same way with people who have a financial interest in some gear sort of doing the same thing.

However I also understand that most of the mods for this forum aren't really here all the time and also are mods on multiple other websites and forums so there really isn't anyone here to make the judgement as to what is legitimate gear review and questions and what is commercial pimping, so some separation does sort of give one a choice

I love our Mods in WSS, but maybe we need to add another one that can be around more. Someone who has been around here long enough to know whats what, and can help improve WSS. Like I said, the Mods here are great, and I consider each of them a friend, but they are some busy guys. I havent seen Brian online in FOREVER.......

Yes, sort of, but in Tech Support we'll get people who don't know what we're talking about giving their opinions. This is a good thread to work some understanding up among ourselves, then maybe we can make suggestions in Tech support.

The way I see it, W&SS was always a good place for any outdoor activity. One member asked if he could post about hunting and I was enthusiastic about encouraging that. W&SS itself can be a big forum: making fire, hiking in South America, camping in your backyard, putting together a bugout bag.

Now we have a Great Outdoors area with W&SS, Hunting & Fishing, and Outdoor Gear. As long as we don't get too crazy about what goes where, I like the extra room. But W&SS itself is the default "when in doubt".

I kind of like the new setup for the most part. Like posting up a new field blade or pack or whatever over on the gear side, and posting skills and trips etc. here. There does seem to be a lot less people viewing the other one though. At a given time there will be 60+ viewers here, and 10 viewers on the gear side. More people needs to post and be involved in both. Spring is here (well for some of us anyway!) get out and practice skills, play with new gear and post in both areas!

OK should we start with a group hug;):D

My definition of it was pretty much what you said:

The way I see it, W&SS was always a good place for any outdoor activity.

Because while I see people doing survival skills you don't really see that many members actually going out in the woods with only a bare minumum of stuff and subsisting.

There's a lot of people who hunt and fish who might like you say be inhibited in posting anything about it in WSS but like you I sorta think for sure hunting and fishing are survival or at the very least self sufficiency related.

Then you have some backpackers and back country campers here

And then you have a whole lot of car campers and dayhikers that might want to dabble in firebuilding, eating wild food, et al.

But not sure there's enough to really split all those things up.

Also a lot of times maybe some guy who might not comment on something if it is in a separate forum but sees it in the forum he's posting in might be more inclined to share some of what he knows.

I mean it's not a big deal to me but hanging around a lot of forums sometimes it seems a lot of times when you divide 1 forum into two you get less posts in the 2 forums together than you did in the old single forum.

Honestly, it's not such a big deal to me. Provided it's equipment that's W&SS based, I wouldn't care if the two forums were merged together again. I don't clearly remember the rationale for splitting the forum to begin with; but several people suggested it so we went ahead and did it. I do remember saying that if it didn't work, we'd recombine the forums. It's not like we're pig headed or unwilling to listen. That said, I do have to say that having a separate outdoor gear forum allows the hunting subforum people to have a place to chime in on stuff too.

True. Always sort of though it was unusual BF had a WSS forum but no hunting or fishing stuff since probably more knife knuts hunt and fish than backpack and bushcraft but maybe I'm wrong on the demographic thing.

One of the points raised in favor of hunting in a separate forum is simply that some people like to hike but don't want to come across pictures of dead animals in their hiking threads.

I have gotten some outraged reports that someone had a picture of a dead animal with blood all over it and no warning in the title. OK, that sounds a little too sensitive to some of us but we do have a lot of people here, not everyone likes everything.

We wouldn't need an Outdoor Gear forum if more outdoors people realized that Gadgets & Gear is one of the fun forums to check out periodically. But Outdoor Gear seems to be working. It takes time for people to decide to use a new forum.

Sheesh! Look at what gets posted in General Knife Discussion every day!

I would prefer if they were merged together, again.

Thank you for your consideration.

I'm okay with the separate forum. There are always gear related questions and reviews. I like it from the ease of searching. If we self-police and help point newbies in the right direction, I think the current break-out will work well. As long as people don't feel like their being gang-raped by a half-dozen gorillas if they post something "out of place", it won't be an issue. I like the relaxed attitude. As I've done in the past, I would recommend a post to be moved to the gear forum as it's much better suited and would probably get more attention. I'm good either way; maybe it's the new Army "don't ask, don't tell" repeal policy we're getting indoctrinated on...:D

I never would have guessed!

I agree Jake ... I think tonym or Rick Marchand  would be perfect for the job.
