Thought we split 'gear' off into another sub forum

Organization is nice and all, but beware...

I've found interesting things on hikes before and posted them in WS&S. There are always new threads about hiking with pictures. But thats not a skill. Its not about gear. Its not hunting or fishing. Its a little confusing where to put it. Since they are not being moved WS&S must be the correct place for them.

dipbait, I think it was made clear that the trip reports still rightly belonged here. As are pics of knives in trees as long as you are describing doing something in the thread other than 'hear lookety my glittery glam' kind of thing. For example, all WilliamM's chopper tests would probably be right at home in the place since he is doing them outdoors and showing shots of zeus and such. All of pitdog's threads, even when he's not demonstrating how to light Vancouver Isl. on fire with a fatwood torch, are appropriate to this place. My read from one of the admin posting to this the thread was that anything outdoors in the outdoors can be rightly placed here. Based on that, I even think my last thread reviewing the koyote knife could go here because the testing and chores were all performed outdoors and the pictures were of the outdoors.

I think the gear forum is more for the 'what should I buy' kind of topics, or, 'what is the best tent', or 'look it my glittery glam that I haven't used, but I'm holding it now and its oh so shiny...' kind of post :D Well that is my interpretation anyhow.

I was wanting them merged. However, alot of you guys have made good points about keeping them seperate. Maybe instead of looking to the past we should focus on the future and all do our part to activly participate in the forums. If you can check your email, you can check another forum. Its been kinda nice not sifting through a bunch of gear threads. It was getting to the point that before the split, it was mostly gear posts. So maybe the split just showed that we need more skills based threads.

If you arent a regular poster IMO, you shouldnt complain about lack of partcipation. Be a part of a solution instead of the problem. YOU GUYS LURKING HAVE NO IDEA THE COMMUNITY YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON.

Not that it matters, but I liked it more before the split. It has slowed posts and responses way down. Instead of looking everyday, or a couple times a day, I check it out a coule times a week. I haven't started a thread since the split.

My vote is to keep the split... but I'm on board for the long haul, no matter how the info is presented.

There have been other possible reasons for reduced posting here. Some manufacturer forums have made off-topic a way of life. We aren't going to challenge that: they want loyal buyers to hang out in "their" forum. (One of those forums just left. Will this return some of their posts to W&SS?)

What goes where? A while ago, someone asked me if he could post his hunting experiences in W&SS. I was enthusiastic about the idea. I'm happy there's a specific forum for it now. The subject got popular.

W&SS can handle any post about wilderness skills or experiences. Travels through the mountains. ANYTHING with pictures. :) But a question about which tent to buy should go in Outdoor Gear, Survival Equipment & More. What if someone posts that question in Outdoor Gear and the answers he gets are posts with pictures of guys setting up their tents, talking about where to set up, photographing the countryside? You could ask for a move to W&SS.

This isn't religion. We won't harm heretics. :p

Not sure why I'm the first one to point this out - but I believe one of the main reasons for the split was because of all the complaining that would occur if someone started a thread about say, sleeping bags. It wouldn't make if off the first page before there would a post something like "How is a thread about sleeping bags a skill?? In my opinion the perfect fix would be to leave hunting and fishing where it is and RENAME W&SS to just Wilderness & Survival and merge gear back in.

Then going forward, if it's gear, an adventure, or a skill, as long as it's either Wilderness or Survival related, it's good to go

And of course we all need to remember that no matter what, not everyone is going to be happy with the solution.

This is what I would vote for ^

I don't really mind the split, but boy do I end up with a lot of tabs open! I currently have 24 tabs that are different forum pages - 5 of them are Bladeforums pages despite no longer having a tab open for ESEE. This would be one of four forums where I have over 1000 posts.
One thing that I don't understand is why the gear needed to be split off - I never had a problem before the split with the threads posted, it was all about wilderness & survival related stuff and I found it worth a look through the headers to see what I might be interested in reading. Since the split I haven't been bothering to read or post as much, possibly not completely the split to blame, but maybe partially.
