Thoughts on 154CM

Maybe it's because I got into knives when 440C was considered one of the better stainless steels, but I really like 154CM, and CPM-154 even more.…
As far as I am concerned 440-C is still a “super steel,” nothing polished to a bright mirror finish like it or can resist corrosion as well. Those custom knives from the 60s and 70s still look great. The industry has simply moved away from using high mirror finishes and instead prefers the coated (painted/bead blasted/satin) tactical look. I would still consider 440-C for a premium bowie knife; although, there are far better steels for knives designed to beat on trees.

154CM is one of my fav stainless steels, well specifically the 154CM that Hogues HT provider uses in their cryo treatment process. I think it's very fine grained for a stainless ingot steel, and responds very nicely to all kinds of sharpening and apex work.
I'm a fan of 154CM I think if HT correctly it can be a great choice.

Yes I have heard people comment that they actually like CPM 154CM better than CPM S30V. Supposedly that limited Buck 110 in CPM 154CM years back was a badass blade.

I personally am one of those people who prefer 154CM to S30V. It just polishes and strops up better, and I don't think you really get that much longer life out of an S30V edge, unless you let your edges wear down a bit and the working edge will kick in. But I touch up my apex's as soon as they start losing shaving sharpness anyway, so 154CM will always be preferable for me personally. If I still worked in warehouse enviroments I'd probably take the S30V.

the popular steel will cut the rope 324 times, the "super steel" will cut the rope 398 times, but i sharpen my knives after approx 250 cuts, ( every 3 months or so) so the supersteel is just taking up more time sharpening.

It is great stuff, especIally as delivered by BM and Hogue. Probably others do it well, too.

As mentioned 154 cm is a good steel, but CPM 154 is one of my favorites. And Cruwear is just phenomenal.
