Thoughts on 8Cr13MoV Stainless Steel

Others have covered it. Easy to sharpen and can get a very sharp edge, reasonable rust resistance...yes it won't hold an edge as long as S30V or something, but in that situation you're talking a steel used in $20 knives vs a steel used in $70 knives, of course there's gonna be some downside. For it's price though, it's a good steel.

What are your thoughts on 8Cr13MoV Stainless steel used by Kershaw and Byrd? It doesn't hold an edge quite as well as I would like it.
I have a tenacious which I've had for a year, I've found that it takes some getting used to, to find the right angle when sharpening on a stone and when I did I've been able to sharpen it up nice on even a $2 stone. I've edc'd mine daily the whole time I've had it and I work in construction so I've had many opportunities to use it everyday. I've stripped wire, cut through cans, meal prepped, hell one time I cut through the metal bed in the back of my Jeep (to get into the gas tank to change out pump, relatively thin metal but..)using a hammer on the spine to punch through, done some light prying, all manner of things and it's not a wonder knife but it has served me well and still kicking for less than $40. I didn't like it at 1st, mostly the look. I had bought that and a blur(which I'd owned previously) and one or the other was to be a gift for my sisters birthday(I said take your pick, secretly hoping she'd take the tenacious) I was left with the spydie and now I want more lol. The Kershaw blur I'd had previously, I had for years and was a great knives but I must say I'm impressed with the tenacious, it's certainly taken a licking and is at the ready for more to date. All that said, the 8cr13 itself IS difficult to sharpen and doesn't hold an edge for a long time but I KNOW it is very strong, especially considering the blade isn't that thick on a tenacious.

In my opinion, I don't like 8cr13mov(or Aus8) at all. I find that it rusts ridiculously easy. I've had knives in this steel rust in a drawer even while they were oiled. Edge retention is not good either. When it comes to budget steels I would much rather have 420HC. Sure 8cr13mov/Aus8 might have slightly and I mean slightly better edge retention, 420HC's corrosion resistance is far superior.

Nice necrobump. But I agree. Good enough.
Sorry, just became a member and didn't realize thread was so old. And...the more I think about it 8cr13mov sucks. I have a cryo that's always been a b*tch to sharpen as well. Got a little carried away with my thoughts on it as it applies to the tenacious. I probably wouldn't have any idea of it's overall toughness(the blade steel) if it wasn't for the fact that it was on a cheap knife and I didn't care about putting it through such paces. I don't know a whole lot about it's composition but maybe being a softer metal is what has saved it. I would never dare do much prying with the sandvik steel(forget what type,#)on say the blur, just seemed brittle and prone to snapping.
