Hello I was looking for some feedback on a knife design. I like the look of the finger choil, but I'm not sure how useful it will be. I'm also not sure if I will pin the scales, or get some chainring bolts and make it removable.

Thanks,
Shane

I think you've answered your own question already. To me, the forward coil just causes a lot of wasted real estate. While I also don't think you'll be able to choke up much better than if the edge came all the way back to the coil even with the front of the handle. Personally I would like it better if you remove the extra inch of ricasso and made your knife 9" overall. I would also take out a little bit more of the flat on top of the handle.

Just my 2cents, not that I know any better,
Chris

I like the design...but I like small ricassos. I make one similar to what you drew up. Here is a pict of one I made that might give you some ideas...

That's a nice knife Adam. It does look pretty similar to the one I drew up. I have been looking at my drawing and the ricasso is quite large. I wonder if I could make the finger choil slightly smaller or move the handle forward a bit to make the ricasso smaller.

What are your thoughts on chainring bolts as fasteners?

They are not my thing, but I think they are fine and give a certain look that many want.

If you want the finger choil infront of your handle...take a look at Murray Carters work. He has worked it out nicely

I personally think (again: just my 2 cents) go ahead with the choil if you like it... you'll know once you make it if its for you or not. the jury is still out on peoples feelings on them and sometimes they are an asset on a design and sometimes they are a hinderance... until you play with it, it's hard to tell IMHO. that being the case, the only thing I would do is thicken up that handle just a little for comfort and control. it seems thin to me.

I like what he does with his scales. They are angled upwards so the ricasso looks smaller. I may have a look at doing that.

It may also be worth looking at how Esee include a choil on their 3 and 4. The handle scales run about halfway up the choil so you don't end up with a large ricasso.
The handle does seem a little thin and maybe consider just a fraction more curvature.

I think I'll do another drawing and see what it looks like with the handle modified. I will add a little more curve in the new drawing. As it stands the handle is 7/8" thick in the middle and 1-1/4 at the back.
