Thoughts on Benchmade Griptilian Steel Choices?

Hey everyone!

I've settled on the full size Benchmade Griptilian as part of the gift for my groomsmen. One of my groomsmen is scheduled to be deployed in October of this year, and I am wondering if 154cm or D2 steel would be better in "the sandbox." Currently he carries a CRKT m16 with AUS8 steel that survived his last deployment, so I figure either would be better than what he has currently.

Any thoughts about D2 vs. 154cm for deployment will be greatly appreciated!

Most Benchmades my military friends use on deployments have 154cm steel choice and they have all held up for them. I've used Benchmade 154cm blade every day at work (EMS/Fire) for about four years or so. Never let me down. I have never used D2 steel and don't personally know anyone that has, so I have no experience to offer on that.

Make it easy on your groomsmen and your pocketbook. Just go with the 154CM version. It is a good stainless steel, easy to sharpen, and holds an edge reasonably well. Yes, it can be argued that D2 is better but, unless your groomsmen are bladeheads, they will not really appreciate the difference.

Also, D2 can be harder to sharpen and maintain. Plus, it will cost you more money.

unless your buddy is a great sharpener and bringing the right stones with him go 154cm. i prefer d2, but if i was gonna be deployed and didnt have the setup and stones i have at home you can bet id want easier to sharpen steel.

Id say either are good. And as "the sandbox" i assume you are talking about the desert. Which would not be a problem for the D2's semi stainless nature (aka it can rust around water). Everything else i can think of has been allready said.

For me, I'd take the D2, but I'm a knife dork and know that that means. For your buddy going on deployment, go with the 154CM no doubts. Like everyone else had said, it's considerably easier to field sharpen.

Nice gift choice...Lucky guys.

If you're sold on the griptilian model, I say get the cheapest available. A grip is a grip. IMO fancy handle/blade materials don't change enough to justify extra cost without going with another design entirely.
