thoughts on Cold Steel tantos?

I like the CS Recon I and it is a plain tanto. I carry it concealed in Wa. state sometimes because i like to wear t-shirts and sweaters on the outside. I don't know if the police have a problem with that, hmm...

Lived in Bellevue, WA for 4 years and travel there often so I have an interest also.

This is off the main subject but WA state law does not state an illegal maximum length. It does, however, mention (paraphrase) "any knife opened using a spring". With that vague definition, it sounds like any assisted open knife might be considered illegal. Seattle municipal code states a maximum length of 3 1/2 inches to be legal to carry in the city. I'm betting other cities have similar laws.

SOG manufactures AOs in Lynnwood, Wa. If there was a problem with them legally in Wa. state i think they wouldn't be able to manufacture them there.

I agree. I have had several of the AUS-8 cold steel knives. Check BladeCrazy and Knifecenter. That's usually where I find the best discounts.

imho they are "ok" the san mai steel isnt anything that great though, i would say its equal too/not better than AUS8, i kinda like the old CS tantos though, not bad for the $$ i suppose, probably better stuff around though.

dont belive everything ya see in CS's videos.

Bladeprince and Girlyman are mistaken that San Mai contains Aus8. The Core of the sandwich is VG-1. This was posted earlier in the thread and was obviously missed. I own a Black Sable with the San Mai III blade and it is sharper than I can make my BM 710 with ATS-34 blade. I don't chop wood with a folder so I can't tell you how tough the San Mai III is but it is wicked sharp.

The core was AUS-8A until recently. Can't keep up with every little change that's made. Don't mind being corrected but I didn't just make it up. There was a valid reason for my comment.

I've also got the 7.5" San Mai Tanto. Really impressive chopper and stabber, but not a useful blade for me. It sleeps in my bedside drawer should I get attacked by a car door at night.....
