thoughts on emerson wave

One of my favorite subjects is the "wave" feature on Emerson knives.

1. The design is valid to Emerson products models alone-- for the most part.
a. Others are starting to wave some spyders, yet they are not available to everyone so the limiting to Emerson knives remains for most if you want this feature.

2. It's a gimmick [ that works ] real well most of the time but can not be relied upon to be 100% under stress as others above have stated
above.
a. I think of it like a crutch, where the users get to be fast at deployment from the pockets when these knives with the wave are used, yet are limited in their ability to open a non-waved folder through lack of practice using the "wave" exclusively.

3. It has brought the folder into the realm of rapid deployment from the pocket where self defense is concerned.
a. Most users would not be able to clear and open a folder of any design faster than the wave. I say most as there are people who do not use the wave featured knives and are as fast or faster than using the waved blades.
b. Those not inclined to practice all that much on drawing a knife rapidly will find this form of "gadget" or "gimmick" perfect for their needs.

4. The wave does eat pockets, though so does everyone of my folders that have a clip which hangs it from the pocket. No difference in this regard.

as far as it being a pocket killer i dont really care, all my pants and shorts are torn up from the CRKT i carry at work, the ruff thumb stud has screwed them all up.

I have a p-sark and a mini commander and my only complaint is how thick the edges are ground. They just are not good slicers in my book for that reason. The handles are very comfy and the wave works well but I don't seem to carry them much simply because they don't cut as well as other knives I have. If you want it strictly for self defense I guess they are they way to go because of the quick deployment. Just my 2 cents which is about what my opinions are worth

When I am playing around, my SOCFK waves out perfect almost every time. However, sure as shooting, when I try to demo for someone I end up with a partial opening about a third of the time.
I would not trust myself to wave properly in a stressful emergency situation. However, this is my fault – not the fault of the knife. --SAK

Well, I'm not so sure it's your fault. As I said, I've seen some very senior knife instructors flub the opening ... strangly enough, only when the stress of demo'ing in front of lots of people.

I have an old Spyderco Delica with a plastic clip that I decided to "wave." It's pretty cool to play with and it works just fine-- most of the time. I flub the opening often enough that I wouldn't even think of counting on it under stress.

On the other hand, my father has arthritis and has trouble with both studs and holes. We waved his Spyderco and it's now his EDC. It's not for defense. If he flubs the draw he simply snaps the blade into position. No big deal. As I said, though-- it's not for defense.

After all, how many times have any of us used any knife for utility, and how many times for defense? Unless you 1) train for knife fighting, and then 2) go out looking for a knife fight, well, what are the odds you will ever?
