Thoughts on FRN Police?

Hi JBoone,

Thanx much for the thread and the kind words. I thought to share some thoughts on design.

Talkin' Story;

The original Police model was designed after quite a few Law enforcement officers said they liked the serrated "Mariner/Rescue" models, but they wanted one with a point. They liked the straight cutting edge, just give us a point. a 4" blade is fairly large and the maximum legal blade length in most of the US a that time (mid '80's). I wanted as small a package wrapped around the blade as was possible and still be safe and ergonomic. The Police Model served that end. We refined the model over the years in many ways. and still retained that 4" blade length.

I personally like to carry a large blade that is more versatile than a smaller knife and still work for food prep. Now and then, I've designed a few models that were for me personally for one reason or another. The Police 4 was one of those models. A large blade that was about as large a folding knife that could be easily carried, and a thin light handle that was easily carried, ergonomic, took a minimum of pocket real estate, and was relatively affordable for a quality piece. . I decided to go into production on it because there ae a number of knife folks that have similar tastes to mine. The Stretch 2 XL was another such a model.

I have a fully serrated Police 4, and think it is neat...it just doesn't feel as "Policey" as the original.

Still a cool knife though. :)

I love my Police 4 in K390. Before I got it I was into smaller folders that wouldn't be so bulky in the pocket. Then I discovered I could easily carry a 4" slicing machine without even realizing it was there. Now I'm stuck on large but pocketable folders; I find I can just do more with a larger blade.

I even ordered a spare which I now regret selling.

I've got to admit, I'm a big fan of the FRN models in K390.

What are the white plastic pieces for?

It's large but very nimble folder.
When you pick up a military you notice how weightless it feels in your hand with the way weight is distributed when it's open and that is great, but guys grab and compare police 4 to military and you will notice it's even more weightless. It's a cutting performance spaceship and I love how k390s are thin BTE

This is probably beating an old drum, but I love the DB detent on lockbacks. The lack of it is something that has turned me off the Police 4.

Is the Police 4 a model with full length liners? I love the Delica and Stretch with full length liners but am not loving the Stretch XL with the more flexible handle.
Can you elaborate on the Stretch XL? I'm really lusting after the PD#1 version but am hesitating due to the lack of any liner. Is it really that flexible or "squishy"?

It is NOT Bugout squishy but it is NOT as solid as a Para3 LW which despite not having liners has only minimal flex. I have a Stretch in K390 and a Stretch XL in PD1. The liners in the Stretch make it feel solid but I don't mean to make the XL sound like a banana. I just don't like any flex and there is some noticeable flex in the XL.

At risk of sounding like a Spyderco salesman, have you noticed the Stretch XL in CruWear with gray G10? I'm struggling to not buy one since I don't need one but I need one.

Edit to add: Just noticed it's not just G10, it's also full steel liners:

We needs the precious...

I get your meaning. I have a linerless Pacific Salt 2 that I really like but, due to the slight flex I feel when bearing down on it, I just don't carry it unless I'm specifically in/around lots of water. Not a lot of flex but certainly noticeable and I'd rather not buy a lightweight XL Stretch if I'm just going to have the same issue (even if it's really nothing more than a mental issue).

Indeed, I am aware of the G10 Stretch XL and would like to get one but just can't justify the expenditure at the moment, especially considering that I already have another Cruwear Spydie in the same size range (Military 2).

The Police is one of my favorite models. I do like the G10 better, but the FRN models are excellent. Recently I received a PD#1 and it may be my favorite of the FRN's I have. The FRN is very easy to dye, which is good because I don't prefer the factory colors. I am hoping for a Salt Police in Magnacut/yellow or LC200n/green in the near future. Here are some that I own - K390 and PD#1. Police set.jpgPD1 closed.jpg
