Thoughts on Marlin 1894 Rifle

I have a Marlin in 30-30. Know thats not exactly what you are asking about but the rifle is a rock. I dare you to break it, you cant.

And RE mini14, the are also both considered by many as "trunk," "utility," "ranch," or "general use" rifles.

I have one in 357 and is is a blast to shoot. Commonly available ammo, and it has a much less ... shall we say agressive? ... appearance than a semi.

ClintB--what type of rear peep is on that Winnie of yours? A Marbles perhaps? I'm thinking of getting one for my Trapper. Could you (or anyone who has experience mounting and dialing one in) illuminate me about it?

I apologize for the thread drift.

I just read last night that if you sight a 30-30 in 2.9" high at 100 yards you can shoot out as far as 225 yards with it!!

I have my grandfathers 1957 marlin 30-30 for a few weeks. Thinking of getting one of these myself :)

Ok the Mini-14 & Marlin 1894 comparison? To me the Mini-14 is just a plinker and loads of fun to shoot. You generally don't buy them for 1 MOA accuracy. The Marlin to me is also primarily a plinker as well and hopefully just an all around fun gun to shoot. If I trapped, I might carry it in that scenario, but I don't any more. Deer hunting; sure. But I use a revolver most of the time now and when a rifle is called for I use a Rem Model 700 270. So, like the Mini-14, it is sort of just an extra gun without a lot of dedicated use other than plinking. Both the Mini and 1894 would make a great survivial rifle. I would be much more likely to carry the 1894 out in the woods hiking or for a walk. The fact that I shoot 41mags means that I tend to have a fair amount of ammunition around at any given time so ammunition is not a problem. I guess at about $0.50 to $1 per round for factory ammo, the 41 mag is certainly more expensive to plink with. To each his own.

Yes, I know that the Mini is semi-auto and the Marlin is a lever gun. For you Mini-14 haters, I guess comparing the Marlin to a Mini is heresy. To me they fill essentially the same niche. As far as being an "extra" gun, well I have lots of "extra" guns that never get shot and the 1894 would get shot.

In the levers chambered for 357 and 44 I was wondering if the 38 Special and 44 Special would work as well.

Anyone know?

Thanks.

I have the 1894 in a .38/357 chambering, as well as a 44 and 45 colt trapper, all three are a hoot to shoot, the trappers all wear williams peep sights ( a much better option than that tang sight in my mind, as the tangs are semi exposed and fragile) The 1894 now has a 1-4 power leupold on it that is complete over kill but my daughter wanted it and i had a scope laying in the drawer...I think she would be better off with the old lyman peep i have in the other drawer but baby wanted a scope, so Baby girl get s scope.
