Thoughts on Marlin 336 (30-30)

.30-30 is a very effective deer hunting caliber and the 336 is a great rifle. Legendary design, nice handling, low recoil, fun to shoot. I love mine.

Hunting-wise, I do think it can be used out to 200 yards but that's pushing it's limits IMO and it wouldn't be my first choice if that range was routine. Maybe after you've become experienced with it's ballistics and have learned how to compensate properly.

...Also, the factory bluing on mine seems to rust like crazy, even with regular oiling. Drives me nuts. I think I'm just going to duracoat all the metal a gray or gun brown color.

Off topic: I no longer oil the exterior of my hunting rifles/shotguns. Instead, every fall I clean them thoroughly and put on a good coat or two of paste wax. Durable and long lasting, doesn't rub off, never a rust problem. Try it, I think you'll like it.

I don't know who makes the scopes for Cabelas but the ones I have are clear and bright and seem to be really good quality. I have had no problems or issues with either of mine and have not had to change anything since I zeroed them in. They are not a Leopold or Zeiss but plenty good for the guns they are made for and the bullet compensator lines are marked out to 300 yards but I have never shot that far with them. Just go to Cabelas website and look at them. Just order the one for the caliber gun you have. It is not a bad scope for $99
