Thoughts on my design

Hello all,

After drawing up several different designs, making cardboard mock ups, and revising, I think I've finally settled on what I hope to turn into my first knife.

I've come to you guys to see what you would change and what you'd leave alone. I'm aiming for an all-purpose design that will fit well in my hand. This is my first attempt at posting a pic, so let me know if I screwed something up!

P.S. Mods, sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

It looks good but I'd skip the jimping and keep it as basic as possible on your first go. I'd also round the butt and get rid of the sharp corners.

what is the intended use ?
do you choke-up your knife when using ? the little guard always make we want to try for more control with little things, but you cut your self with your design

i agree on the jimping , first one, don't over do it , hard enough to get it right, ricasso lining up, edge symmetrical ect. ect.

Not to jack your design, but I second the above. Ditch the sharp angles. What you have drawn there is basically a hunter. For a hunter type design, you aren't going to be stabbing anything... at least shouldn't be... so add more belly. If you ever skin something out, or field dress with it, you are going to be using the belly of the knife for the majority of your cutting. It should be nice and round, with a nice thin grind. For normal camp type stuff, you would be surprised by how much cutting you will also do with the belly of the blade. Since you mentioned multi-purpose, I left quite a bit of flat area behind the belly. That should serve for any battoning of wood, slicing of food, etc that you may want to do. That little dip/anti-choil/ricasso/guard bump may seem necessary to keep you from cutting your finger, but isn't. Again, you aren't going to be stabbing anything are you? If not, then a nice index finger radius there will do just fine. Obviously your grind won't go all the way back to the index finger, leave a little room... Of course, if you DO want to do some stabbing, then you need a fighter. And that is an animal all of its own...

Cheers, good luck, welcome to the fray...

Firebolt, good point about not having the ability to choke up. I try to design to cater to as many possible uses but it seems I end up eliminating one use while trying to make another use easier (if that makes any sense).

Lucy, I came here to get suggestions, so I am more than happy to see what you have to say! I've never had the opportunity to hunt (but I am really hoping I get the chance to), so it's kind of interesting that you say I've drawn up a hunter knife. I was trying to keep the knife slimmer so it has a lower profile, which makes it hard to get a nice belly on it. But like you say, the belly will be used most of the time, so if a few extra millimeters is what it will take to make the knife more usable, then that's what I'll do. I do have the guard up there so it will give an index finger a bit more area to hold on to. I like to have a secure grip on my knife to minimize the chance of the blade going places I don't want it to, but you're the expert, and if you think it's unnecessary, then you're probably right! Also, I'm not planning on stabbing anything, but if the unlikely situation arises where someone/something is threatening me or my family, then it might be pressed into service as a defensive weapon.

Thank you for all your tips and suggestions,

Ryan
