Thoughts on Quartermaster QBS-1 "Marty McFly"?

Well yeah that could be a bad thing. But to be honest we're seeing some real high end stuff out of China these days. Look at custom knife factory and kizer. Maybe they are shipped handles and blades separately to avoid the no imported balisongs rules

All very true. I only believe Quartermaster should be honest about Country of origin.

I have read some very positive comments about the QBS-1...I do think they should of added bushings, but overall looks like a great design. I just pick up a QTR-6 and the fit and finish is top notch.

Congrats,I hope you like it. Some intricate machine work on that new Bali-song.

Omg. Using plunge locks as the pivots? That's not asking for trouble at all.

The amount of actual pivot contact puts this solidly in the toy category.

I'm really surprised that they haven't been sued over their knife names yet. It's clearly unlicensed use and it's not even close to qualifying as fair use. It's only a matter of time before somebody notifies the legal department at one of these movie studios.

LOL, its not surprising to me. It just drives the point home that truly no one cares, lol. In all seriousness though. All the bs about the company aside I find it to be a gimmick. I am not the best flipper in the world but I have seen many posts on what flippers like and dont like and many times on any given topic they are usually on one side or the other on most topics. This? I dont really see many people adopting for flipping. And the pivot I see as completely compromising strength for convenience. To me its as useless as a side door on a submarine.

Oh. The rights holders do care about this sort of thing. They have to defend their rights or legal they lose them. It's just that this is really small under the radar potatoes. If they were to find out there would be lawyers and nastygrams to cease and desist in very short order.

Looks like they can skate the law.....

Also, names alone do not have copyright protection. So just mentioning the name of a character won’t be copyright infringement without more.

When it says that names themselves aren't copyrightable and that you can't get in trouble for mentioning them, that is one thing. I.e I can write an article and mention Marty mcfly all I want. That's not infringement.

If they named one knife after a character, or a side character, that may even skirt the law somewhat.

Naming an entire line of knives after the main characters of a series? That is just asking for trouble.

I don't expect that I could make a black knife and call it the darth vader, make a blue and white one and call it the r2d2, etc. without lucasfilm paying attention.

I know. That was more of a joke emphasizing the lack of regard most have for the company.

But...nothing about these knives have anything to do with Marty McFly's character....unless he carried a balisong in the movie.

The law says that you can't own just the name "Luke skywalker". You could write a book with a character named that as long as he wasn't similar to the Star Wars character.

Now, put him together with Han solo, leia, chewbacca, and r2d2, and you better have a decent case that it's parody. By associating it with the rest of the characters you are make it clear that you don't have an independent character that happens to be named Luke skywalker, but that you are referencing somebody else's work.

Seriously. If all names of characters were automatically in the public domain for anybody to do as they pleased, you'd see a lot more "Spongebob SquarePants" named Mac and cheese mix on the shelves. Minus the character image of course. Mac and cheese has nothing to do with spongebob, so by the public domain argument I should be clear to make spongebob squarepants breakfast cereal and whatnot. Clearly it isn't so.

Can someone explain the questionable history of Quartermaster? This is the first I'm hearing of them.
