Thoughts on Scrapyard/Bussekin

i'm intrigued by the Bussee lineup, they have that patented magical hole you know.

plus they make a Khukri, but for the price of that knife, i could almost buy one of every Becker. or 8 machaxes. or something.

Yeah, I was curious to try it. I ordered a 711(that said now available or some such), and then 2 weeks later I emailed n said "hey just wondering when this will ship" the short of it is maybe a few weeks. I know the busse nuts are cool with that, but I kinda figured there was a knife in stock ready to ship. Not quite the case. I'm not bad mouthing them, as their rep is solid, I was just dissapointed to find out I would have to wait so long. I saw the 311 and I really want one, but waiting another month or more to get it...I'll pass for now.

I have a 711 on order (currently have no clue when it is arriving), and I have to agree that the entire Busse ordering/purchasing system is pretty flawed, and only works because their customers aren't exactly what you would call "casual". The limited production runs of each model is frustrating in its own right, but what is even worse is the arcane system with which you have to go through to get your hands on Busse's. Unless you're part of the initiated, you probably will miss out on pre-orders and the like. Buying them in the secondary market is just as frustrating.

That being said, the 711 was a great value. I was comparing it to the Ritter BK12, but after getting micarta scales and a new sheath for it, the 711 was cheaper. But for a big chopper, I have my heart fairly well set on a BK9, which I think looks amazing once it's stripped and has new scales. I'll be interested to see if the difference between 1095 and SR-101 (52100) will really be that noticeable.

Care to elaborate? Is it just SR or all Bussekin?

Have you ever tried buying from them? The models that they have may or may not be in stock. If they're not in stock you may wait a year or more for them to be in stock or ready for order. For SYKW and Busse, once you order you wait for them like you would a custom maker. Look at their forum. You have guys starting threads begging for knives to be released. Not to mention thread after thread of people new to them asking how to get one. "You can't because they're not released yet" is the common response. It's basically what you have with Becker and the tweeners only that goes for every knife the busse kin sells. I just didn't find the knives to perform well enough to justify the aggravation. In fact my Izulas (3 of them) have all had better edge grinds on them then the 3 Swamp Rats I had.

There's only been two models of Busse I actually liked. Apparently they don't make them anymore or they're not available to the general public. The rest of 'em look ugly as sin to me. Besides that they want way too much for 'em and I'd rather put together another AR-15 with that amount of cash. I have an old Camillus USMC Kabar clone I paid about $20 for back 23 years ago that's done everything I've needed it to do. So do my Beckers.

The wait for the Busse models is part of the fun! I just can't understand why people get so damn worked up over the business model. It freaking works, people stand in line to shell out big bucks for a Busse. I do, and I have fun with it. When it becomes not fun, I sit back and relax and buy a Becker or two. Some people get real dick hurt if they don't get what they want when they want it.

I searched for a good two years in the aftermarket for a Busse I just had to have. The search and waiting are just part of the fun, once I got the knife I was after I was a happy piglet and I was on to the next must have knife.

In my mind you really only need a couple knives, hell, people have been getting by with just a machete for years. If you like collecting, using or buying and selling knives and want more than one, you either have to wait for the model you want or move on.

i've spent years, even decades looking for certain things, knives included, esp Beckers :)

finally bought a knife i wanted 25-30 years ago. sweet.

now if that ain't patience, i don't know what is?

I have a 511 BK10 and a Busse B10. I like the handle on the B10 better than the 511. The 711 has the same size handle as the B10. My BK10 definitely fills my hand more. The 11 series from Scrapyard seems to be a kind of throwback to some older models from SY and SR. The 711 has been likened to the SR Camp Tamp which is considered a great camp knife. The CT has a round choil while the 711 has the square style. I don't think that it would take a lot of work to round it or have their custom shop do it and then you don't have to worry about ruining the heat treat. I am probably going to sell the 511 as the BK10 fills that size role better for me, but I am also probably going to get the 711 and 311. Becker and the Busse kin companies are the best of the hard use knives that I have come across. Becker is at an attractive price point along with SY. SR is a little more pricey due to the micarta handles and Busse is the king of the hill cost wise but they also have one of the best warranties in the industry and their steel is almost magical.

+1
check out knifetest dot com for a wide range of comparisons 1095 SR101 INFI and many others included. Plus look into what goes into making SR101 and INFI and you will see that the amount of time and labor that goes into each blade translates into the added price, if nothing else. When you add in the properties that these steels have you can understand the cost and amount of time from order to delivery. Some models are set up to ship right away and others have to be made to order. The labor that is involved doesn't necessarily warrant making huge piles of knives that are going to sit around because not everyone can afford them or are even willing to spend what they are asking. There are TONS of people out there who wouldn't spend $50 or even  $100 on a knife.. I used to be one of them and now I know different, you still get what you pay for in a lot of cases, I've ruined too many cheap knives and now demand quality regardless of price. Depending on where you go Beckers are $100 and up depending on model and if you are looking for a rare or prototype model you need to be prepared to pay a premium for it when and IF it shows up on the secondary market. It's the same with Busse/Kin they are just more expensive.. Investment was a big part of the reason why I got my BK 10 and that was $150, was only available through KaBar, was only available to Beckerheads at first, and then even after it was made available to the general public numbers were very limited ;) Again, it's the same with Busse/Kin they are just more expensive..
I am going to order a Machaxe later and then I have to decide BK5 +BK16 or BK2 + BK15. :D Hope this has been helpful...

Busse and Bussekin are excellent knives, and so are Beckers

Got an RMD, I like it (still wondering where the sheath is tho). But my bk10 is my goto knife. They're about the same price I think.

i dont own a becker but this is my view, the swamp rat RMD is the only knife i have 2 of and swamp rats are the only knives i've seen taken down to 15 degrees per side and cut though a car door hinge and come out in one piece and keep in mind this is 3/16ths stock, yes beckers are tough, yes other knives are good but i've never seen another 3/16ths knife at that edge angle cut though a car door hinge, be pounded into a rock or used to climb a tree and come out in 1 piece.
