Thoughts on the Chris Reeve Cult....

Good posts from Rick.

And I agree that severedthumbs seems to have confused the concept of "custom" with that of "handmade". Although, as has already been noted, the term "handmade" is a relative one. Machines are involved there, too. ;)

With regard to the "sight unseen" thing, I'm a fervent CRK fan, but I'd at least wait to see the knife before ordering one. And, since we're talking about knife "cults", I might as well 'fess up: I'm a Strider fan, too. :)

Precisely. If you want to get "technical", a drill press is a machine. So is a belt sander or grinding wheel. Unless your talking a knife built from scratch with no power tools, which is insane, the definitions will overlap.
The human working with tools effectively becomes a machine.

Wow- I wonder if there was this much fuss about the first guy who got caught hooking his grinding wheel up to a motor?

How does an artist using state-of-the-art tools make him less of an artist?

Yes- anyone who can use and program a CNC machine can be a "knifemaker"- so can anyone who can use a file! The end result will always be what tells the sheep from the goats.

is it better to be a sheep or a goat?

Buying and owning anything takes a part "need" and a part "want"!If you have a great deal of one or both parts,it becomes a highly prized value to the owner. Plus, the quality of product and service cannot be disputed. When I emailed CRK,Heather replied promptly every time, and treated me like I had been buying for years and had spent thousands. She was quite aware I was looking at buying my first CRK.I just bought two Sebenzas today, unheld but justified!
