Political stuff aside what are your thoughts on these?? I was thinking as a gen purpose woods beater?

I have one--
GREAT BEATER KNIFE!!!!

I dipped the handle in Plastidip!!!

MUCH BETTER

I modified (shortened and re-ground) a full-length one for a guy who couldn't find the short-bladed one but couldn't carry any blade over 4" for legal reasons.

I didn't get to use it much, but as far as I could tell it was a decent piece of high-carbon steel. It took a very nice edge without trouble. I'm not crazy about hollow grinds, but the one on that model is quite shallow and I don't think it hurts the knife. The black finish on it seemed fairly durable. The nylon sheath was nothing fancy, but quite serviceable as I recall. All in all, I believe it would be a great low-cost choice for a beater.

If I had one, I'd hammer the handle a bit flatter/more oval, because I find round handles difficult to control. Either way, you could fit a cork or something in the end of the handle and have some storage. I've heard of plastic-dip and cord-wraps for the handle. I have some black rubberish adhesive-backed foam that I think would work great too.

If you like the general design, I say go for it.

I have one coming, I was impressed with the reviews and I like the company and everything about it. Stone me.;)

EDIT : Oops, thought it said pocket bushman, my bad.

The regular bushman is a great beater knife, no doubt about it.

I bought a second a while back, the primary grind is screwed up, so I may have it convexed. I think it's a good beater, but the sheath sucks IMO.

The only complaint I have heard is that your hand has a tendency to slide forward on the tapered handle during use, and you are likely to cut yourself. 42Blades had a nice cord wrap that I copied on mine, and the grip is now really solid. The post with this cord wrap was about 1-2 months ago.

I just ordered 2 to play around with... I figure it I can strap to my pack for hard work when I'm toting a mora
Sort of a low budget leuku Puukko combo

I dont own any custom or real good knifes. I do have the bushman and found it works great for making traps i did batton with it and it cuts great. Oh the edge it came with sucks big time. i did put a convex adge on it and had to touch it up only once even if it didnt realy need it much. For the money its a great knife. If that would be the only knife i had i would be o.k with it. I do need to get my hands on a realy good knife to compare something to.

For those who haven't seen it, here's the wrap. :)

How did yours come out, Chewbacca? I think I either missed those pics, or I'm just spacing it. Either way, I wouldn't mind seeing them again!

I love my Bushman, and I pound the snot out of it. Edge retention and toughness are both way nicer than anything in its price range should be, and even though the finish isn't very good and the grind lines are worse (which are hidden by the coating) it really doesn't matter for a knife of this kind. It was designed to do one thing: handle everything you don't want to use one of your "nice" knives for!

I've thrown mine, dug with it, batoned it through the gnarliest logs imaginable...the only thing I haven't done with it is pry. And it's still in great shape! Hard to beat for a cheap knife!

I'd spend the extra $8 and get a mora 2000. Better knife IMO but if you want some thing to beat than this would be it.

I agree with James regarding the handle. The perfectly round grip "rolls" around in my hand quite a bit with extended use. Looks as if FortyTwoBlades may have a remedy for this dilemma. For the price, it's hard to match. I've constructed traps, batoned firewood, prepared many meals (veggies, meat, spatula, fire poker), and made a bow drill set with the blade with no problems. Easy to resharpen. The old fashioned mountain man style sheath seems to be better suited to flatter knives, as it's meant to tuck inside of your belt: a little oversight. Buy one for dirt cheap and "beat" away.

I have one that's around 9 or 10 years old. It's tough as snot. When I first got it, I attached it to a rake handle and threw it like a spear over and over. I kinda figured the tip would break off but it never did. Instead, it would bend like a spring and always return to true. It comes with a super cheapo sheath. I made a couple kydex ones a couple years back for a friend who was dissatisfied with the factory sheath.

I've seen some bad reviews on the newer versions. I have no experience with the newer ones though.

So I ordered 2 bushman yesterday to play around with... I placed the order over the phone (standard delivery) and low and behold there was a package from knifecenter awaiting me today...
My first impression is that it is a great knife the handle is more comfortable than I expected. and it is razor sharp out of the box.... I got the "survival sheath" option which is the standard sheath with an extra pocket in the front.
My only small complaint so far is that there is a bit of space between the handle and the place where the edge begins, a usable choil would be real nice there..
I plan on giving it a proper workout and getting a better review up.

You are lucky you are near MD, I have to wait a week for my Knifecenter order :) Looking forward to your findings. I have an old Bushman that I have only used a little bit. The knife performs pretty well, especially considering the price. And I would be afraid to play with it as a spearhead.

Indeed. The raised ridge of the wrapping does quite nicely to prevent rolling. I like the idea mentioned earlier, though, about taking a hammer to the handle to flatten it slightly. Might have to get another one and try it out! My only concern would be the handle weld breaking out, so you'd have to do it gently.

For reference, mine is one of the newer Chinese-production models in SK-5 with the welded socket. Mine has taken tones of abuse, including countless occasions where the blade has been bent 45 degrees or more out of line as it was batoned through heavily knotted wood. It's still straight as an arrow and sharp as hell.
