Thoughts On the Lava

IMHO the Lava with FRN scales could probably replace the Dragonfly. Don't get me wrong, I have 2 Dragonflys and I like them, but the Lava is waaaaayyyy nicer :)

The Lava is a wonderful little folder, no doubt about it. I like everything about it including the designer, my friend Chad Los Banos'.

I'd write all my thoughts but I'm strapped for time. You can read my thoughts on the Lava if you like in my blog link though. If the wife lets me alone for a while I'll come back and write it but right now I've been ordered off the computer to help her move some plants in the shop. Guess I better get my back support ready. ;)

I'm generally a fan of the steel handles - they give a sense of solidness that other materials don't match. However, I think they make the Lava a bit heavy. The ergonomics are good, so slipperiness isn't an issue for me, but the overall package is quite a weight for a Jester-sized blade. This could be good if you wanted an impact device...

I love the look of the Lava, and I was planning on getting it, but the price just pushes me away. BTW: I think that the design of the Lava calls for something other then G-10. I love G-10 handles, but I don't think that it would work. It just doesn't "look" right without the SS. I think that if you were going to do something, do the Bi-directional FRN, but do it like the D'Allara. Full skeleton SS liners and a good molded FRN handle. And a metal clip, not the wire.

The Lava is my "big" little knife. I love the feel of this knife in the hand because you feel as though you are holding a much larger knife. I'm a lefty and I'm glad it's ambi although I also wish it was tip down. I don't worry about it at all though because the blade sits well inthe handle and it's so short that it will never open in my pocket. All in all a well excecuted design. I would like to see a larger version. :)

Datan,

I didn't think there were any more current Spydies that I HAD to have (have bought a few in the last year that I'm thrilled with), but a Micarta handled Lava with deep carry wire clips.. very nice!!

We did have a G-10 concept model at Blade, but please be aware, nothing has really been decided at this point. We wanted to get feedback (like we always do), but it's not considered a prototype at this point. Concept models are used in R&D, but it doesn't mean it's in the works yet.

Just want you to be aware.

Kristi

How much more feedback do you need, I remember seeing a mega multi page thread on the spyderco.com forums wanting lighter scales

Hey Fishwatcher :)

The 2 Lavas were done for me by Tricod. I think he did a fantastic job on mine even though the version I asked for was his first of that kind on the Lava. He's told me that he has found a better and faster way to do what I wanted.

The Lava is a fantastic knife of which I own multiples :D It is so good I wanted to have different iterations of it for different situations, or just cos I would like a different colour or feel to it.

I might get a linerless G10 version done in the near future, or maybe a Titanium one :p

Etched titanium would be AWESOME.
I'd miss the heft a bit, but it would be really nice, and grippy, and titanium looks better when scratched.

+1 on the titanium. A titanium handle with some nice coating would be seriously nice. Maybe with some kind of machined texture, similar to the one on the Zero Tolerance 0300 handles.

Damn, that's pornography right there.

I've thought of doing one in all titanium but it would look about like the stainless and not lose that much weight although some would be lost I'm sure. The main draw back for doing one all titanium to me was the smoothness of the handle would still be there. The handle would have to be grooved out to give it some grip and then bead blasted but truthfully you can do that to the stainless ones so why change the handle?

I am getting another Lava for myself and will probably do that one in textured carbon fiber like what Spyderco used on the Military model or Calypso III I think it was. Maybe the II I really get em mixed up. I have done one using liners but on a folder that small its not really needed in my opinion. It just adds more weight to me. Now with most thinner stock micarta you really need the liners though since it is not quite as rigid as the G10 and carbon fiber materials in the same thickness.

I like the textured carbon fiber personally. Its way strong, super grippy just the right way and light weight. The main draw back is of course the cost of the material. Its pretty high right now and about like buying a sheet of titanium anymore if you can find it in stock.

Steve,

Quite true on the titanium there and hence my hesitation in getting one done in Ti. There would be little difference in weight and only a slight difference in its look and feel. I was thinking more of skeletonised handles ??? possibly, but it sorta ruins the flowing lines of the design.

Textured CF linerless on the Lava would be exquisite if done correctly but as you say the skyrocketing prices on these (as well as Ti) are making pimping costs fairly prohibitive ATM.

A nice fat denim micarta burl handled Lava would be a nice difference :) Then again I have been toying with the idea of getting someone to put some teeth onto a red G10/ micarta Lava ;)

All I know I have a Lava on order and should be arriving tomorrow cant wait I have a few of Boker/CLB designs and love them I am sure I will love this one too cant wait. :D

hey guys i have my lava for 2 weeks now and i love it here is one pic i have

Unless someone actually has the chance to handle a Lava, I'd say take the "stainless steel is slippery talk" with a grain of salt =>for this model. For most hands/sweaty palms combinations, the ergos of the Lava render that fear not worthy of consideration.

This statement comes from someone who can leave puddles of hand sweat in the right conditions, so I'm confident I know of what I speak.

I agree but you are talking when the knife is open. During opening the blade it becomes a problem
