...rats often have muddy fur that can dull a blade quickly. With two identical blades in one knife, a trapper could skin twice as many rats before having to touch up the blade...
This is almost the same idea behind a double bit axe. Some (most?) axemen would use it to chop twice as many trees before they got dull, but SOME (many? most?) would have a different grind on the edges, almost like having two knives. I guess when you're felling big trees sometimes you want more bite and sometimes less?
For me, personally, I don't have much use for two identical blades. A Case yellow CV muskrat will probably be the last knife I add to my Case yellow CV collection...unless I find a fantastic deal on one.
