Thoughts On the Wave?

but some of the more traditional guys just say "It's a gimmick knife, and I don't like gimmick knives" or give me the "mall ninja" comment. I'm getting an Endura 4 with the wave regardless, I'm just curious as to what others think.

I like my wave on my CQC-8, I think the wave on the Endura and delica look funny, but I bet they grab alot better then mine. :)
"Gimmick knives"?? I don't think so.

I, for one, wish Spyderco would expand their waved offerings to their higher-end models. I think a waved Chinook 3 would be nearly perfect.

I've never heard of the wave feature being illegal anywhere. Where did you get this information?

JNieporte:

I agree with everyone here. The wave isn't gimmicky at all. It provides a practical feature. Now it may not be for everyone, but it's certainly not mall ninja-ish. I love my Endura Wave, it sees the most pocket time. I don't wave the knife open every time or even half the time. As a matter of fact, I use it maybe 15-20% of the time or so. It's comfortable to use with or without waving it open and you have that option to wave it open if you choose.

That sure sounds like a wave. Do you know if this was made specifically because of the wave? How new is that law?

Thanks to everyone here. I plan on getting a waved Endura, and I'm drawing up plans on putting a wave on my Byrd Cara Cara.

So much for my idea of using a waved Delica 4 as my urban pal whenever I journey down Boston way.

Hmm, is there any case law on this? It would be interesting to see. It sounds like, as someone mentioned above, it was written to cover sheaths that automatically open blades. But the wave is a part of the knife itself. It seems nitpicky, but sometimes that's what it takes.

My guess is that the courts would interpret the law as written to include the Wave. Notice that the law states device or case. The first definition of device in the dictionary is as follows:
De-vice
1.a thing made for a particular purpose; an invention or contrivance, esp. a mechanical or electrical one.
sadly, this would almost certainly include the Wave:(

I love the waved Spydies, I just wish they added the wave to the knife, rather than grinding one in

No gimmick, I have my Manix zip tie "waved" and also have a Large and Mini Commander. My EDC is the Manix at work and use it every day with gloves on probably 20-30 times a day, quite handy! The Manix with zip tie is waaaaayyy easier on the pants. Again, no gimmick.

 "(b) Whoever, except as provided by law, carries on his

Sounds to me like it's illegal to draw a folding knife already in the locked position, not locking as it's drawn, because it wouldn't be locked until it has been drawn, if that make sense. Is it illegal to carry a fixed blade?

Waved knives are practical: no fumbling around with opening mechanisms or need for fine-motor skills...

I've got a waved delica and carry it everyday. I'm waiting for the waved endura and considering an Emerson.

The one thing is: I still havent achieved consistency opening with the wave. Practice, practice and more practice....

I think the waves here to stay.

Anyone who has to break down a large pile of boxes will appreciate a wave feature. It is a very useful tool, but everyone has already stated that opinion. ;)

The wave feature has some real attributes. Working in law enforcement i've found that carrying my endura wave in my weak side front pocket gives me another option in weapon retention, defense ect...I've found that I can have my endura wave out and ready with my weak hand much faster than even my autos or assisted opening knives. Once practiced my endura is very reliably opened.....I find comfort knowing I can keep my strong hand on my weapon/holster in retention defense and quickly engadge another tool with my weak hand....good stuff!
