Thread size for ZT t6 pocket clip screws?

Does anybody know what thread pitch that ZT uses for their pocket clip screws? I bought a scale for my ZT 0550 that wasn't drilled & tapped for left handed clip mounting. I have the holes drilled, but ruined one of the screws trying to use it to tap the holes. I need to buy a tap to properly thread the holes, but I don’t know what size I need.

thanks

I'm only tapping the g10. The scale backing plate is already tapped. I used a 1/16" drill bit, which is a hair too small, which is probably why I couldn't use the screw to cut the threads.

thanks!

unless you are the luckiest guy in the world trying to match the threads from the G10 to the scale isnt going to happen. Drill the G10 for clearance and use the liners threads to secure the clip.

Take the knife apart, but leave the scale attached to its respective side. Run the tap through the threads on the knife from the inside of the frame to the outside of the scale. The threads will match.

According to the Machinery's Handbook, the clearance hole for an No. 2 screw is a no. 36 drill (0.106"). A 7/64" would probably work too.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I used the stand-offs to attach the new scale to the backing plate, and ran the screw in from the back side. The G10 was just too tight for that little screw and I ended up stripping the torx head. I worked the screw in and out with pliers, but as the screw was getting closer to full penetration, it just started to get too hard to turn for my satisfaction, so I quit. I picked up a tap this morning, and I expect that a nice sharp tap should have no problems cutting that G10.

I expect that would be way too big. Based on the thread linked above, the right size is a # 50, which is just slightly bigger than the 1/16" that I used. The 1/16" was just a hair too small, but managable. Based on the chart I'm looking at, 7/64 is about the size you'd want for a #5 screw.

The drill sizes I listed are not for cutting threads. They are clearance holes for the screw shaft to go though (i.e. the G10, handle material, and clip) before engaging the threads in the liners. If the scale is threaded, it won't permit the screw head to properly compress the scale and clip up against the threaded liner as nwmetalbug mentioned.

You are correct about the no. 50 being the right size for tapping.

Success! I tapped those holes tonight and put the knife back together. I took a pic, but uploads to Photobucket via phone are infuriating, so it'll have to wait until I can upload on the PC.

Remarkable to me that someone can do that. Good job. :)
