Thread Update: Benchmade 950-1401 Review

My apologies. I guess the coffee hadn't kicked in yet :o I meant to ask about the Mini Ultra Presidio.

I did play with a Mini Barrage some time back, and really liked it. I've never been a fan of assisted opening either, but for some reason I didn't mind it on that particular knife

Ahh! I was wondering where the 440c comment came from. :)

I've actually owned that knife. I really liked the grip but I liked the mini-grip a bit better.

The Rift has become my favorite knife. My first Benchmade was a 710, and even though I kept it for 10 years, it barely saw any pocket time. Made for a decent investment when I sold it to fun a limited edition knife. I say give the Rift another try. One that you may not have considered is the HK 14715. Same blade size as the Rift with a belly that is very, very similar -- but in D2, full liners, G10 scales, Axis lock, USA made -- all for about $100.

I like the 14715 a lot. I don't really care for the black blades though...

Seriously bad ass man. I really dig it, orange is my favorite color. I too hope the handle works for you. The Rift, to me, is to knife as Black Lab is to dog. Perfect.

I think you made a great choice. There is something about the Rift that draws me to it. I got the same knife but with black blade. I may try to find a 950 today with the black/charcoal handles. Congrats on a nice knife!

Thanks guys! I do really enjoy an orange handled knife. I'm usually an all black kind of guy but that knife was right at 150 bucks with S30V steel. I have NO issue with Benchmades 154cm but since it was less money I figured why not.

Here is the original thread in italics and below that in bold will be the update to the thread.

Haven't had a Benchmade in my pocket for a while. It's time to remedy that and I'm trying to decide which to go with. This will be an EDC knife. Here's the rundown right now:

1. The 710: I go back and forth on this one. I love the knife and how it carries; i'm just not big on sharpening the recurve.

2. The Rift: Had one of these for a short time and decided the handle wasn't for me. I kind of want to try the handle again and do some sanding on the aggressive gimping. I really like the blade shape and the 154cm blade material.

3. 908 Axis stryker. The handle is more my style (simple/straightforward) compared to the rift. I've never owned one of these so that would be a new experience.

4.This one is out: 746 Mini-Onslaught: Never owned one of these either. They look nice though.

Share which you prefer and why? Thanks!

I went to my local store that stocks Benchmade knives. They really don't have a ton and I wouldn't buy many of them due to the fact that most have black blades and are serrated. They do have a small butterfly knife that's pretty cool though! I checked out the 710 and the 746. I've owned the 710 a few times. I really enjoy the way that knife carries but I don't like the recurve and I don't care for the D2 steel. Good steel but its tough to sharpen and is a semi-stainless so for the money I feel there is better value in other steels. The 746 was a beautiful blade and I really liked that knife until I held it. It wasn't made for my hands.

After looking online at the Axis Stryker I wasn't sure about it or the Rift. The Rift was my first Benchmade that I purchased. I remember not caring for the handle a ton but loving the blade shape so I'm hoping that I can make the handle work for me this time. I ended up going with the orange g10 version with CPM S30V. If anyone else has one of these let me know what you think!

Did you buy all of those ? :D Congrats on the new knife. That is cool looking

When I was discussing with Benchmade design engineer that 550HG ought to be saber grind, I was pleasantly surprised that S30V and D2 version are.

Needless to say about versatility and variation Lg Griptilian can have.

I wanted 3.5" class with thumb hole instead of thumb stud when I go for jogging. You know during colder weather, your finger lose dexterity. I figured thumb hold is much better. Sure, if I have dozen AFCK, then I will bring it.

Secondly, Griptilian is very light. FRN jimping and traction dimples comes in handy even in the rain.

I highly recommend custom knife builder Griptilian 550SG. Good thing is either black or satin, it is same price.
