I went on a three day trip to the woods. I was there to gather some specific photos, but a also found some cool ones for a hike thread.

Spent a little time enjoying the view from "Snoopers Rock", got to see a few buzzards riding thermals.

Saw some future Blackberries...and some spiders

Lunch the first day.

Lots of Polk Salad up too. I learned...judging by the only prints in the immediate area, that apparently deer like Polk salad and are smart enough to only eat only the small young shoots or just the top parts of the larger plants.

I have no idea what this is...

Big ant holes? Thing only things around the first hole were large black ants and a few yellow jackets and neither were going in or out of the hole.

I spotted this little guy checking me out...wondering what I was doing in his neck of the woods.

IMG_7388.jpg

Looks like he, or one of his cousins, has been hanging out here.

I decided I liked the idea of putting the photon "Black crater" cord-lock light on the same lanyard as my fire starter. The light came in handy several times over the trip. I also learned that I really like the sheath Marion made for the RC-3, the retention is awesome!

The second night I spent over at Davis Pond. There was a lot to see over there. The cherries are kind of sparse this year but coming along and a lot better than last year.

IMG_7462.jpg

The peaches are really looking good though.

IMG_7465.jpg

Lots of Dragon flies.

Apparently Dragonfly mating creates a lot of friction or water is needed for the fertilization process...Couples would repeatedly fly down to the water, disengage long enough for the one to drop down and dip their tail in the water and then re-engage.

Then there on the last evening I made a nice fire, cooked a good dinner, and enjoyed the view listening to the sounds of the frogs, crickets, and crackling fire as the sun went down. I got the eggs a little over done in the effort to take the pics, but I'll take slightly overdone eggs in the woods cooked on an open fire over perfect eggs at a restaurant in a city any day :D

Very cool pictures mistwalker. Love them river shots. Any oxbow lakes in the area given the bends of the river like that?

Thanks Ken, you would think so but none that I have ever run across.

Some great photos-I could almost taste the steak and eggs-yummie!

Thank you, glad you liked the photos.

It had been a long day of hiking and looking, the steak and eggs was a great end to the day!

Amen, brother.

Great pics.

Great Pix again! Funny how simple foods can be gourmet in the bush.

Btw, tons of poison ivy around you. I'm itching just seeing that stuff. I actually used my RC-4 w serrations today for the first time. I actually enjoyed it, made it easy to cut bows. As always, I appreciate your pic posts!

Great pics.

Thanks, to me pretty much all food tastes better cooked over an open fire!

Especially after a long day in the field.

The RC-4S is a very capable knife. I've done everything from food prep to making bow drill sets with it and I love this knife.

Thanks bro, glad you enjoy the photos!

Nice photographic essay. I'd say you know how to live right!

Thank you.

I know how...just don't always get to...

Mistwalker thanks for sharing.I always enjoy your pics and stories!

Mike

Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoy them!

steak and eggs..........hmmm

Yep, one of my favs :)

man those meals look great, I like the dragon fly pics, I know how hard it is to get a good one from them, the self portrait is my favorite......all around great job mist!!!!!!:D

Lovely pics Mistwalker.
It's great to see pics of the dragonflies and to read about the unusual mating rituals!

great pics mist!!!

You did a 3day in that pack? How did that work?

I think the dragonfly was laying the eggs in the water, as the male of the species typically retains its hold after through fertilization, and sometimes throughout the entire egg laying process. I like bugs, and have too much weird info in my head. :o

Wish I was there!

I've said the same thing about north Idaho bro.

Not sure what it's like up there, but it's already hot and muggy with lots of bugs, spiders, and poison plants...though I didn't see any snakes this time.

Thanks man, yeah...I have a love of observing things.

Hahaha no, the truck was a mobile base for the entire trip and set up in a different are each day. The cooler, water, and most of the food stayed in the truck while I was out hiking looking for pictures. Though at one time I had eight knives (ranging from 3 inch blades to 12 inch blades) a tomahawk, and every fire starting method I own in that pack along with my "survival" gear and some food...extra batteries, and poncho and stuff in case I needed quick shelter from a storm. I could probably do a three day in this pack ok...but there would be no steak and eggs :)

I know the feeling man, I like nature in general I have spent a lot of time just observing things...my head is filled with useless information.........

BTW, just came back in from the store and saw a pair of Coyotes has made it into the neighborhood. This isn't exactly farm country so I find that interesting.
