I am going on a trip with a few other professors that teach a combined course of Biology and Hiking and Backpacking to a state park. I will be teaching expedient fire, bow drill making, and how to pack their own BOB (survival kit) when they get home.

I go next weekend. I will take pics.

One thing I plan on saying about 800 times is "A knife is a TOOL not a weapon!" and encourage them to have an EDC knife on them at all times.

What knife can I suggest for College students to carry, that they would, that would be a good knife for sheeple and be usable as a EDC. Remember they are college students, so cost matters.

My original thought was a SAK farmer.

Thoughts?

something bright, and..... rescue looking:D

not a spyderco MILITARY, or POLICE. something rescue in the name.

Opinel is good, too.

Almost not looked upon as a real knife at all by sheeples: Izula
(the coating seems to lead a lot of people to think they are plastic toys, especially the pink version along with the pink spork, they go so well together, that the knife is suspected to be the same material)

Griptilian is a good utilitarian blade. Not too expensive, tough enough, cuts well, solid lock.
Plus, it lives up to its name, as in it's very grippy.

I'd suggest a SAK of some kind, if they need/want lots of utility in a small package. A Buck 110, if they just want a cutting knife. If they want a fixed blade, i'd suggest a Mora of some kind, a Buck Diamondback, or a Kershaw Antelope Hunter. Or, possibly one of the Cold Steel Line. Canadian Belt Knife, Finn Bear or Roach Belly. Depending a bit on what kind of SAK they get, any of the knives i've suggested can be had for under $30. A few can even be had under 20. Not the best of steels, but they are pretty easy to sharpen. (Can i suggest that someone should atleast try to run through how to maintain a sharp knife? A dull knife can at times be more dangerous than a sharp knife.)

Another reason for the multi tool would be to allow your students to spread the gospel. When everyone knows you have a screwdriver, pliers, scissors, etc... they come to you to fix things and you might have a few moments to show them a knife is a tool.

I do not recommend getting a knife for both Wood and EDC, unless they live in the woods. Remember, it's not an EDC if they don't carry the knife everyday. Getting a knife for both purposes may end up compromising both situations.

If for EDC, I would really consider the knife for weight and PC ness. Personally, I would not carry anything heavier and bulkier than a Alox Farmer. For cutting, I would go with a Case Sodbuster JR CV. For sheeple-ness, I would pick a Alox Cadet or a Case Peanut in bone, Mini Wharnie Trapper, or Small Texas Jack.

For the woods, Mora 510 and a small folding saw.

God Bless

My initial thought was an SAK of some sort, too- but I see much wisdom in BBT's thinking. A multi-tool makes a lot of sense, especially since many Institutions have "zero-tolerance" policies regarding any kind of knife.

*sigh* When I was in college in the mid-eighties, we could have firearms on campus- we just weren't allowed to keep them in the dorms. They were stored at the Campus Security building, and you just signed your gun out whenever you wanted to use it. Those days are gone. :grumpy:

Fiskars hand axe, fiskars folding saw, Kabar Warthog folder (10 dollar EDC blade, solid as a rock linerlock with g10 handles, chinese stainless but it holds a solid edge!) Condor Rodan for rough use, Mora or Condor Bushcrafter for finer tasks. Sounds like a good time!

In this day and time ?
Multi tools are the way to go and not "scare" anyone..
For a folder .....a 110 buck or Case bone folder looks " normal" to sheep.

Knives with micarta ,G10, thumb buttons or serrations might have the brain trusts at homelessland insecurity checking them for "Terrah Kontaks".:jerkit:

I think the Farmer is second to none as an EDC/woods knife. Other suggestions are good, but the Farmer is strikes a great balance between being cost effective and effective effective!

I carried a spyderco delica through college. It's as thin and light as you can get. The blade isn't huge either.

Alox farmer. A great, simple blade, a small number of useful tools and the small saw for any possible woods use. I love other inexpensive options like a Mora, but for versatility and college-appropriateness I don't think a Vic Farmer can be beat. (I do like my Leatherman Juice S2 for versatility, but it isn't great in the pocket.)

As a college professor myself, I can say that the most used implement on most students SAKs would have to be the cap lifter, particularly if your college is west of the 100th meridian where decent beer is drunk, even by college students. :)
