Three days - with college students - teaching survival items...

I'd go with the Grohmann instead of the cheapy Cold Steel rip-off.

I would aswell, if it wasn't for the fact that i was trying to get knives under $30. The Grohmann is better allround i'd think, not having handled either the Cold Steel version or the Grohmann.

Some variation of a SAK. Relatively cheap, easy pocket carry, unlike most multi tools. Everyone is familiar with a SAK and it has wide acceptance with even the sheeple. A great gateway drug of a knife!

SAK: Tinker, Super Tinker (adds scissors), Farmer, Trekker

Someone mentioned Ka-Bar Dozier folders. I don't have one, but i think they would be good. Good looking design, cheapish, and good steel.

A large blade SAK with a saw is the minimum I would advise. That or a multitool as mentioned.

Stress notification before one goes and signalling, two survival subjects not well covered in many courses.

Skam

I'd say some type of SAK. Tinker or a farmer, perhaps. Multi-tools are nice, but they are more expensive if you want nice ones.

I don't think this is covered in your criteria, but boiling water in a beer bottle is a neat little tidbit, and the college kids seem to have access to plenty of those :)

A SAK for those that can be trusted with a non-locking folder and a spyderco persistance for those who can't. Don't forget the subject of basic knife sharpening, a knife is worthless if its not sharp.

+1 on the SAK I would think that the Farmer or 1 hand trekker would fit the bill.

i would have to say a wave especially if they wanted to carry on campus however $80 could be a bit steep for a kraft dinner budget

I would suggest a SAK as well, they seem to be universally excepted by all people, sheeple included. Or an Opinel, Case, buck folder, etc. Just about any "slipjoint" type knife tends to go over well with anyone, even for people who are "anti" knife, because there dad or grandpa probably had one, and they look at them more as a tool than they do tactical folders and fixblades.

Although I love my LM Wave, I would suggest against it. Multitools are heavy and worn on the belt, it is not likely that they would carry them everyday, but a slim SAK is pretty easy to through in your pocket.

A mora and a SAK farmer would be sweet. Kidwholaughs has a point. You don't want the class carrying around larger fixed blades since chances are it is illegal in your state to carry one on school grounds. Maybe a SAK and a opinel like suggested. I think one or two cheap, but effective knife would be very easy on all their pockets while still being great to help hone their skills and get them interested.

SAKs never did anything for me. The spearpoint slippie just doesn't turn my gears.

I'd recommend they find something that they like... the key is the tool not weapon concept.

Buck, Gerber, SAK, Kershaw, Benchmade, Imperial, Case... whatever. Just a 3"ish blade that feels right, holds an edge, & cuts well. If they get the knife bug, they'll get something nicer when they know what they want.

In an edc situation, at least for me, there are plenty of better screwdrivers, pliers, awls, can openers, etc. around that I could use if I need them. I just need a good edge.

The last time i put a beer bottle in a fire it broke.

I would suggest what I see on campus on a given day:

SAK's-Farmers or Classics usually. I think a Tinker or Camper is great as well.

Leatherman-Kick, Wave, Surge, Juice, Micra ( I honestly see a college student getting the most use out of a Micra)

Simple slippies like Case, Schrade, etc. It seems as though the faux stag handles convince the sheeple that they aren't weapons.

I would steer clear of:

Anything by Spyderco, Gerber, Benchmade, etc. If you are dealing with a sheeple-friendly environment, these knives may be too much...

You guys should be submitting an IGRT grant and have NSF supplying them all with battle mistresses.

Another vote for the Wave!

Down the road, they can add a fixed blade and an axe or chopper, and presto - Nessmuk trio. The Wave is a true EDC tool. It's ugly, but compact and useful.

All the best,

- Mike

Was it full of water?

The fire can't go above the water line. Put it in coals, shoveled to the sides. The water cools the glass preventing a fracture. Also has been supposed to work on lunch bags, though I haven't got it to work yet.
