I've pretty well figured I need three folders for EDC.

The CS Mini-Recon seems to fit my needs for work, and I'm looking at a Ritter Mini-Grip for off-work.

What I want ideas about is a knife for formal wear.

Blade length in the 2" to 2.75" range. I don't need anything bigger than that.

No animal parts. Light colored wood or synthetics are fine

Slipjoints are okay.

I would be good with a Spyderco, if I could find one without the hump. Sorry guys and girls, I know a lot of people love them, but I just can't get over that bump in the spine of the blade.

One more thing: $120.00 is the ceiling, and only because of the Ritter. I get nervous above eighty dollars.

Any ideas?

My dress up knife is (for now) the Buck 55. It's the half-sized version of the Buck 110. There are other Bucks with the same shape and slight variations in size (Prince, Squire).

Too bad about the Spyderco hump issue, because the Caly 3 in CF is awesome for a dress knife. It is very nice looking (I polished my blade to spruce it up more), very light, feels awesome in hand, and carries very well.

the Spyderco Native 5 is a great little knife and no hump but not sure if its good for formalware maybe if you upgraded to some custom carbon fiber scales.

The Caly3 is up for black-tie affairs. But I would hesitate to use any kind of clip while dressed up, even a wire clip. I'd prefer to drop a knife completely in my dress pants pocket, unseen.

Of course, you can just drop a Spydie in your pocket too, and their clips are removeable. But it won't sit as well because of the handle shape/size.

If you are wearing a jacket, clip it to one of your inside jacket pockets. I feel you about the clip showing on suit pants, and the jacket pocket has been a great solution for me.

How about a nice little slipjoint with Acrylic scales? This one for instance?
(this is a GEC sleeveboard)

There's other ones in other colours as well. But this one fits the size. As does the EZ open models by GEC.

My suggestion was going to be the Sage 2 until I saw your comment about the "Spyderco hump." The Sanrenmu 710 isn't a bad little knife for $10 or so. No hump on that one.

It's larger than you'd like, but the Boker Plus Titan is a good looking titanium folder. It only has a 440C blade, but it's also only about $40. Again - it's got a larger blade than you're looking for.

Ah. Good idea. I've never thought of using that pocket... I think that pocket might actually still be sewn shut on my jackets.

On a further note about my Buck 55 suggestion, I find two-hand-opening knives appealing for formal occasions.

I'm a big fan of the Caly3 though, and you could go either way - black carbon fiber or brass and wood.

Vantage Pro looks pretty slick, and the polished silver deep ride clip doesn't look tacky, even in a back pants pocket.

Benchmade 707 is just a wee bit over your size preference, but just within your budget

Formal wear? I guess I don't do formal wear, but I do occasionally wear a suit. I will and do carry any of my big EDC knives with a suit.

If I was going to buy a dedicated formal wear knife, I have thought about the Spyderco Sage. The new Spyderco Gayle Bradley Air would probably be a good choice. I also have seen some interesting Benchmades such as the Shoki. I even have a CRKT Delegate that I think is a good looking knive for formal wear, and for that matter you could get a Kershaw Leek.

How bout an Al Mar Hawk. It comes with a leather slip case. I have mine in cocobolo wood. Street price around $120

I like the Spyderco Zulu as a formal wear knife, it is very gorgeous and different looking. Its just a tiny bit bigger than you mentioned, its just under 3 inches for blade length. I just see it as a great knife for formal wear because its a knife that "normal people" cant stop looking at. I had one and used it for a work knife.. I work in a tie and dress pants and everything, and I really liked it. I had alot of compliments on the uniqueness of the Zulu. I got mine in trade but you can find one for around $100. I wore mine in my pants pocket with its clip, but that was because I needed it often and I was at work.. which I dont consider a formal event... but I wore it a couple of times at dinners without its clip loose in my pocket and it felt great.

Good Luck in finding the right knife for you.

Oops.. double post.. sorry about that. My internet froze and when it defrosted there were two posts.

Well again good luck.
