Well my daughters boyfreind killed me a dear yesterday. I think he is trying to get on my good side. He did everything for me except cut if off the bone and put it in the freezer. I have been doing that for the last 3 hrs. I used 3 knives to do all of this. Buck 119, for the large cutting, Swiss Army knife and kershaw Vapor, for getting off the slimy stuff and trim work. I love all three knives dearly and all are great knives, but i must admitt, everyone that helped wanted to use the Kershaw vapor. It held the edge the most and was easiest to do trim work. The Buck 119 dulled pretty fast and the stainless steel swiss army knife done ok but that kershaw really held up great. Its still sharp after 3 hrs of cutting everything. I love that kershaw. Now thats a great company. Like i said i love all three knives and all are great but the Kershaw Vapor did the best. Just a little testing on my part and i thought eveyone would like to know............Happy Thanksgiving......... Oh and if Glockman99 reads this. Thanks for getting me hooked on Kershaws. You know your stuff Marine. You taught this Army guy somthing new.

Sounds like a good provider to me!

So were you using the 119 to cut hide?
If you were doing the same kind of cutting with both the 119 and the Vapor would you still expect the Vapor's edge to outlast the 119?

To be honest, none of those knives have great steel. I think if you tried a Spyderco in VG-10 you would be amazed.

For some reason, I think Spyderco's VG-10 is the best. Or, an Al Mar Shike in VG-10, that is a nice one as well.

I think a Spyderco Military or Para-Military in S-30v would impress you as well. Or better yet, I think they just made one in D-2.

What I am saying is, you owe it to yourself to own at least one really good knife. You don't have to spend much more then $100 to get a great knife.

Apparently kriggs, this user feels you can get a really good knife for quite a bit less than $100...and it doesn't have to even be a BM or Spydie. You go segaman!!!

Not to mention that it could be very well be a Kershaw, with VG-10, for under $100!;)

This looks like it would do quite well on DDD (Deer Dressing Duty):

Hey maybe my Wife will get me one of those high dollar knives for Christmas. Thats a good idea you guys just gave me. Oh and the boyfreind skinned the dear. He brought the hind quarters and shoulder and stuff to me in an Ice chest. I just had to finish it up. I used the Kershaw and Buck both doing the same stuff. Dont get me wrong, I luv the 119, I just got thru shapening it again. It didnt take anytime to resharpen it. I just know what i have seen and the Kershaw Vapor out performed it.....Like i said, Its not what i like the best, its just what done a better job...Kershaw outperformed them, simple as that.

I edc the Vapor. Sure, it's not glamorous. I doesn't cost alot of money, but I personally think it's a great knife. I like it better than the Blur and a SOG Flash II
Not an expensive collection, but these days you don't HAVE to spend $300 to get a great knife. You can if you want and that's cool, but it's not necessary.

Part of sharp is the steel & the heat treat, and part is the blade geometry. Kershaw has been making dangerously sharp knives for a long time. I've been buying them since before the great knives designed by Ken Onion, and they are still fine users. I just picked up a mint Starkey Ridge recently to go with my Talon. The Vapor? It even looks good. :D

I like Kershaw Spyderco and SAK in any order and steel because you know that you get good quality for an affordable price! I have a Vapor 1 and a 2 that was engraved for my 21ste. they are all terrific knives for the price so my respect goes to those companies.

Or think about this: A.G. Russell makes the Deer Hunter and the Bird and Trout out of VG-10 or D2 (the Bird and Trout also comes in ATS-34), ground thin to cut well and do exactly the job that you are doing with your Buck / Kershaw / SAK. They are not fancy show-pieces, but will hold an edge longer than the good knives you already have, while also being easy to clean. All at a price that's hard to beat (~ $50).

I have knife "B" above and must say it's been one of my favorite, most-used knives, especially for breasting out ducks and geese. I bought mine years ago and I don't think it was offered in a premium steel then.

If I had to replace it, I'd get it in VG-10 or D2, for sure.

The deer-sized model ("A" above) would be an ideal, bargain-priced, premium steel deer cutter-upper!

Stay sharp,

Thanks guys for the post. I am thinking of getting an Ontario rat 3 or 5 out of Brigade Quartermaster. Well maybe my wife may get me one for Christmas. I like the 1095 steel over the D-2. What do you guys think?

Great to hear that your bargain knife performed so well.

I also EDC the Kershaw Vapor. The only time I have really dulled the edge is when I pulled it out to cut around the foil on a couple of wine bottles this Thanksgiving. I didn't even notice anything amiss until yesterday when I noticed that the edge was rolled from cutting against the glass bottle. A quick session on the GATCO with the ultra fine and finishing hone and then a few strokes on the strop straightened things out. It is now sharper than ever.

I bought my Vapor at Walmart for just shy of $20.00.

I missed out on deer hunting this season due to personal matters. I was considering trying the Vapor out with the field dressing. Now I know I will have to try it out next year.

My two knives I normally use are a Buck 103 and a custom hunting type knife. I have been able to get an edge on the Vapor that is a bit sharper than the Buck or the custom.

segaman22, I ordered a RAT 5 and a TAK I on Friday. I will let you know what I think when they arrive. The RAT 3 blade seemed a little too small for my needs, so I opted for the larger ones. Ouality and durability is supposed to be top notch. If you are interested in the RAT 3, you should check out the RC 3 from RAT Cutlery. It is made by the designers of the RAT line with some improvements over the Ontario RAT 3.
