Three knives put to the test!

Thanks guys for the post. I am thinking of getting an Ontario rat 3 or 5 out of Brigade Quartermaster. Well maybe my wife may get me one for Christmas. I like the 1095 steel over the D-2. What do you guys think?

To tell you the truth I love both of them. The 1095 will be less corrosion resistant and may not hold an edge quite as long, but it is easy to get the edge back quickly and extremely durable. For some reason I just have an inherent trust for the carbon steels, 1095 being my favorite. This is probably because that is what I grew up with and could always trust to handle anything I threw at it. Had I grown up only using "newer" steels I would probably feel differently.

The RAT 3 is a fine hunting knife. and 1095 is a good steel.

But D2 steel is FAR superior to 1095 IMHO. It is more rust resistant, and holds an edge much better.

In my experience, D2 is one of the very best cutlery steels in history. That's why some of the best knife makers in the world, like Bob Dozier use it.

I agree completely. Everybody is all nervous and jerky about D2 being prone to chipping. As long as the HT is good it will perform magnificently. When S30V first hit the market, it was prone to chipping (maybe). But, once the HT got figured out properly, it took care of the chipping "problem". Ask Bob Dozier (D2) or Chris Reeve (S30V), if they have any problems with their chosen steels.
