Three Sisters Forge Beast vs. Sebenza

I'm looking for a hard use EDC custom folder and was looking at the Sebenza mini when I stumbled across the Beast which also looks great. They both use S35V steel and titanium for most of the knife. The Sebenza is a bit more expensive though. Does any one have any recommendation on either or another high quality knife in this price range? I know the Three Sisters Forge is a custom but are Chris Reeves knives production I'm assuming?

Thanks!

I've got those knives, and had or have most of the popular knives in that range

I love my beast and my small micarta sebenza, but carry the beast more

you get your moneys worth with either of them, and both would be a solid choice

if you wear slacks more than jeans; sebenza

vice versa; beast

I have and carry both, depending on mood and pants.

Like tricker said, slacks=Sebe, jeans=beast. The Beast is much more aggressive in demeanor whereas the Sebe is refined.

And yes, Sebenza is a production knife where the Beast in hand built one at a time.

Buy both.

This is not the right forum for discussing those knives. I'll see if I can get it moved to the appropriate one for you.

EDIT: That was quick.

Sorry about that I just joined the forum and wasn't sure the appropriate place. I think joining here is going to end up costing me a lot :D

Thanks guys for the information! I mostly wear jeans. I'm thinking I will try the Beast first since its a custom and cheaper than the sebenza. Is the sebenza mini a tad but smaller than the beast?

I went the TSF Beast route as well, and haven't regretted it. Mine has the CPM154 blade steel. It gets very sharp and holds an edge extremely well. The ergonomics of the handle and blade are also excellent--it's thick (.157"), so it doesn't slice as well as very thin knives do, but it still does very well, and works extremely well in more bush-crafty things (cutting/carving wood).

I would recommend considering having the edges rounded/smoothed for you. The frame comes with very sharp corners and edges which are great for work gloves, but not for regular hands. I send mine back to have them smoothed out, and Jim did that and sent it back very very quickly. The knife is also easy to disassemble and adjust if need be.

When you contact Jim ask him about options--he has made the Beast in several different steels (S35, CPM 154, ELMAX), and has also offered phosphor-bronze bushings or bearings for the pivot.

Cheers,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel, any idea what his turn around time is?

Just email and ask--I expected to wait, but when I emailed he had knives nearly ready to head out the door, so it was a matter of a couple days. If he hasn't started building a new batch, it could be a month or so. But he's very quick to respond by email, and a very nice guy. I've also toyed with the idea of swapping out the thumb-stud for something a little less grippy, but opted to keep it. Everything about the knife is overbuilt and very grippy.

I just talked to Jim yesterday and he is currently waiting on frames said it should be within the month.
Also he is only using elmax atm.

Thanks! That's awesome I think Elmax is a little nicer. Is knife still $300 as listed on his website?

Yes still $300 and if you want one out of the up coming batch I suggest you email him immediately they were about all spoken for.

I just send him my shipping info. This is going to be a long two months and a big upgrade from my Benchmade and ZT's. :D

Do you have the blade with the larger belly or the "spear"? I ordered it a few days ago, the regular Beast but am wondering if the spear is better? Does anyone have any preference or insight? Thanks.

I have the regular "tactical" style blade. From the pictures I have seen of the spear point, I prefer the tactical--it appears to be overall more useful.

Frankly, I didn't find the blade shape of the TSF Beast sexy or that attractive, but in practice it is very, very useful and versatile. Functionally it couldn't be better.

Does the TSF have a web site? Anyone have a picture of the beast?

Try google and get both questions answered. Anyway, the beast kind of feels like a more rugged, rough around edges sebenza. Not that the sebenza isn't tough.

You should check out some of Jeremy Robertsons blades.. Search for Calavera Cutlery. I have one on the way and can't wait. It's like a beefier hard use sebenza.. Which is exactly what I need!

Good luck man, I don't think you could lose with either of those options.
