OK, I know this is just baiting, but I thought this claim might be of interest. From Cold Steel’s newest catalog, hot-off-the-presses, _Special Projects_ 19 (Spring 2000), p. 18:

“The [Cold Steel] Ghurka Kukri will out-chop any factory or handmade knife, including swords twice its size, and expensive, hand forged Japanese katanas. It’s the heaviest khukuri on the market.”

CS Ghurka Kukri listed specs: 12” Carbon V blade, 5/16” thick, Kraton handle, 22 oz., 17” OAL.

The CS is actually quite light for its size compared to the working khukuri's found here. It is in about the between a WWII and Sirupati in terms of weight for equivalent length. My mom and sisters love using the CS for yard work because it is light.

The CS is a great weapons khukuri but I would not want to do too much work with it. The CS khukuri will take the heavy chopping but I could not take the khukuri for very long. The CS works great when only one blow is required and for machette type work.

The H.I. and CS khukuri will always have a place with me.

Yea. Sure. I have a close friend who bought a CS Gurka Wannabe Whatever.

He bragged that it could out chop any knife. He asked me to come over to witness the wood slaying extravaganza. I showed up, and after oohing and awing for a few minutes pulled my 15" AK out of my bag. I then pointed him to the HI website. He now suffers from severe knife envy...

I personally do not like cabon V steel as it has continuously rusted on me. Both my Recon Tanto and my Trailmaster Bowie have rusted to the point where I could not get the rust completely off. If you have to rub it with a diaper every day to keep the rust off then it is not for me.

Pakcik Bill.

This is my confession: I owed gratitude to CS because I 1st came to know about KUKRI thru CS website! After that I made a search on KUKRI thru YAHOO and I saw HIMALAYAN IMPORTS ... then only I know about KHUKURI, HI KnifeForums and Pakcik Bill! Finally I purchased my 1st real Nepal made 15" AK from Pakcik Bill and I named it as DHAJU!

Thanks CS!

Thanks for the comments, Will and all. I haven't used the CS kukri but don't doubt that it performs well. It just seems to be another case of inexpicably diminishing their own product and credibility w/hype. Is it not possible for Lynn Thompson simply to say, "Our kukri is an excellent tool that excells at tasks X, Y, and Z"?

(sigh)

It bothers me a lot to see how Thompson puffs his products. They are in fact pretty good, for what they are. I have an SRK...very tough knife for the glove compartment. And their Twistmasters were originally a very nice light utility folder with an absolutely fail-proof lock...sort of like an Opinel on steroids. But CS's 'combat' weaponry is mostly derivative and inferior to the stuff it copies. I have a push dagger of theirs that is as much danger to the wielder as to the intended target, because of the lack of finger room between the haft and blade. The 'shovel' products are a joke, I could make a better spear/combat axe out of an Ames shovel from my local Wally-world. BTW, I should hasten to say that 'most all of the CS stuff I have or have used was freebies (it helps to be related to a dealer.) I guess maybe Thompson got into cutlery because all the carnival barker jobs were filled...

As I have noted in the past:

1. Cold Steel products are decent for what they are: good quality at a very reasonable price. I don't own any cold steel products, but I know many people who do, and who swear by them.

2. If you listen to and believe the CS catalogues, Lynn Thompson farts daylight and everything he touches is perfect in form and function. Its BS. Drivel. Pure huckster.

I second the above-state sentiment of not understanding why he cannot say "I make good knives and at a reasonable price" because he does. Its the truth. Sure, he can snazz it up a little, thats salesmanship. But what he does is stupid and garish, and frankly it insults my intelligence. So I vote with my dollar and buy knives elsewhere.

*shrug*

Mike

PS But, like my wife looking at People Magazine in the checkout line, I will admit to the guilty pleasure of thumbing through a Cold Steel catalogue and grinning at the hype- and the decent knives.

Storyville :

The [Cold Steel] Ghurka Kukri will out-chop any factory or handmade knife, including swords twice its size, and expensive, hand forged Japanese katanas.

Earl Stewart, while he was still a MD dealer, said that the ATAK would out chop any knife regardless of size. He also claimed to have won a CS khukuri from a guy who bet otherwise. Therefore logic dictates that the ATAK will outchop a HI khukuri. Proof by contradiction.

As for claims, simply put, will CS guarantee that their blades will perform at the level they are described as? No. Will Bill do this for the hI khukuris? Yes. Who do you believe? Bill.

I'm not sure I want the heaviest kukri on the market, but still my 18" Ang Khola is one THICK monster of a knife that feels so light in my hand. Give me a CS kukri and my 18" AK and I guarantee you that the CS will fold under the abuse that the AK can take without a blink.

Thanks, Kmark.

Please note than no badmouthing has been done in this thread. It is simply a case of better and best and this is not badmouthing. Better than the worst is badmouthing and this has not been said.

Thanks for playing by the rules, all!

I held the CS Khukri owned by John Powell. After further thought, I agree with him, it is more of a tool. I still think HI makes a better product.

Bill, when's the barong coming out?
